The Nikon FE is a 35mm camera. It belongs to the group of reflex cameras. It is the predecessor of the Nikon FE2.
The lenses of the 35 mm camera are interchangeable. Lenses with a Nikon F bayonet can be used. The Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 is often found on the camera. More than 60 years ago the first lens with the Nikon F bayonet was introduced. Over the years, the mount has been reworked again and again.
Lenses are sold by Nikon under the “Nikkor” brand. But there is also a wide range of lenses from other manufacturers. But beware, not all modern camera lenses can be used with the old cameras. There is no autofocus function on the Nikon FE. The focus is adjusted manually.
The 35mm photo camera has a light meter. This is designed for an ISO range of 12 to 4000. The exposure is measured through the lens. The camera has an automatic exposure control. In the aperture priority mode, you select the aperture yourself and the camera automatically sets the exposure time. Both the desired exposure time and the aperture can also be set by the user.
The Nikon FE has a bulb mode. A more external flash can be connected to the PC flash port or Hot Shoe for pictures. The camera has a built-in self-timer. It also comes with a connection for a cable release and tripod.
Measuring 14.2 x 8.9 x 5.7 cm, the Nikon FE weighs 590 grams. Two LR44 batteries (eBay / Amazon*) are provided for power supply. The use of two SR44 batteries (eBay / Amazon*) is also possible.
Films for the Nikon FE
The Nikon FE must be equipped with 35mm films. For this film format, there is still a good selection of material for color and black and white images. A possible film for color photography is the Fujifilm Superia 400*. One option for b/w images is the Ilford Delta 400*.
The color film is processed in the C-41 development process. The C-41 process is standardized and is offered by most development laboratories.
The exposure area of the Nikon FE has a size of 24 mm x 36 mm. The film is winded manually in the camera with a lever.
