The Nikon F4 is a 35mm camera and was introduced by the Japanese company in 1988. It belongs to the group of professional reflex cameras. It is the predecessor of the Nikon F4 and was the successor of the Nikon F3.

The camera was sold in different versions with different battery packs. The original F4 comes with the MB-20, which has no vertical grip and can take 4 pictures per second.

The lenses of the 35mm photo camera are interchangeable. This is made possible by the Nikon F bayonet. The F4 works with any lens ever made for the F mount within the functional limitations associated with the lens mounted on the camera. The autofocus serves as a focusing aid for most manual lenses at full aperture.

The camera has an exposure meter. It is designed for an ISO range from 6 to 6400. The Nikon F4 determines the correct film speed via the DX code.

The exposure is measured through the lens. The 35 mm camera has an automatic exposure control. The photographer cannot select aperture and exposure time. Both the desired exposure time and the f-number can be set by the photographer.

Shutter speeds from 1/8000 s to 4 s are available. The 35mm camera also has a bulb mode.

A flash unit can be used via the Hot Shoe or PC Flash connection. The Nikon F4 has a self-timer. There is also a thread for a tripod.

The camera weighs 1090 grams and the dimensions are 16,8 x 11,7 x 7,6 cm. The power supply comes from four AA batteries (eBay / Amazon*).

Films for the Nikon F4

The Nikon F4 is a 35mm camera and needs 35mm film. These films are still being produced and the development is offered by most photo labs. Possible films for the Nikon F4 are the Kodak Ultramax 400* for color shots and the Ilford XP2 Super* for b/w photos.

The color film is designed for development in the C-41 process. This development process is available at almost every photo lab.

The exposure area of the Nikon F4 is 24 mm x 36 mm big. The film is automatically transported by the camera. The motor is capable of 4 frames per second.

There were different backs for the camera. Among other things, there was a back for the exposure of the date. With the MF-24, there was a magazine for the use of yard goods. Up to 250 pictures were possible with one load.
