llano 2-in-1 High-Speed Card Reader Review

As photographers, we are constantly surrounded by essential accessories, especially memory cards. With increasing resolutions, so does the number of cards you have to carry, and thus the need for a reliable reader. But what if you could combine a robust case and a fast card reader into a single device? The Llano R404 memory card reader promises just that. Can this combination device truly simplify your workflow on the go?

Size and Build Quality

At first glance, the size of the Llano R404 stands out. It is undoubtedly larger and more massive than a conventional SD card case. Holding it in your hand, you feel a certain weight. The dimensions are 58 x 118 x 25 mm. The weight without memory cards is 110 grams.

At first, you might think it’s relatively large for a simple SD card holder. However, when you consider that it saves you from carrying a separate SD card reader, the size is quite acceptable.

The housing is embedded in a silicone sleeve, which can also be removed, giving the device an IP54 certification. This means it is protected against dust in harmful quantities and splashing water from all directions.

What bothers me a bit is that you simply have to pull the housing to open it. There is no button or other mechanism required to open it. While it holds quite well, a mechanism to prevent accidental opening, especially if the Llano Case falls, would be good just for peace of mind.

The scope of delivery includes a carabiner, two replacement rubber bands, and a USB-C to USB-A adapter.

Features and Handling

The interior of the housing offers space for a total of twelve memory cards: four slots are for standard SD cards and eight for MicroSD cards. The cards sit firmly and securely in their respective cutouts, preventing accidental falling out. However, they are still very easy to remove.

From my personal perspective as a photographer who mainly works with cameras that use standard SD cards, the distribution of slots is a minor point of criticism. I would have liked more slots for the larger SD format, as MicroSD cards could also be stored in any SD slot using an adapter.

The core function, reading the cards, is what distinguishes the Llano R404 from a pure storage case, and this is where it shows its strength. The device supports the UHS-II standard, enabling transfer speeds of up to 312 MB/s.

For photographers who handle large RAW files or 4K video material, this speed advantage is clearly noticeable in everyday use. Transferring gigabytes of data is significantly accelerated.

Another practical detail is the ability to read and transfer data from an SD and a MicroSD slot simultaneously, which is efficient when, for example, you want to back up footage from your main camera and a drone in parallel.

A well-executed detail is the integrated USB-C cable. It’s short but long enough to connect to a notebook and can be elegantly and securely stowed away in a designated recess on the housing after use. So you never have to search for a suitable cable again – a small, but incredibly practical feature in everyday life.

As a nice extra, there is also a small tool for opening SIM card trays on smartphones, and accordingly, there are also slots for Nano-SIM cards.

Conclusion

Can the Llano R404 simplify a photographer’s daily life and replace two devices? The answer is a clear yes, albeit with minor, personal limitations. The device convincingly combines a robust, weatherproof case with an extremely fast UHS-II card reader. The build quality is solid, and details like the storable cable show that the needs of creatives on the go have been understood.

The only drawbacks are the unfavorable distribution of card slots for my taste and the considerable size. However, if you consider the device for what it is – a 2-in-1 solution – the size is immediately put into perspective.

So, forgetting your SD card reader device can no longer happen with the Llano 2-in-1 High-Speed Memory Card Reader. Unless, of course, you forget the Llano device itself.

Haha, ‘Unless, of course, you forget the Llano device itself.’ – that’s so me! But seriously, this looks incredibly handy. It’s easy to overlook how much friction small things like separate readers and cables add to a shoot day.

This product totally nails the ‘solve a common problem’ brief. Combining protection with high-speed reading in one durable package is a brilliant idea. For serious photographers, the speed and convenience alone make it a worthwhile investment.

The size and weight aspects are always a trade-off, aren’t they? For someone who prioritizes minimal bulk, it might feel a bit large, but when you consider it replaces two items and offers weather protection, it seems like a reasonable compromise. Good breakdown of that point.

It’s amazing how much camera gear has evolved to be more convenient. This Llano device really highlights the ongoing push for integrated solutions that simplify our workflow. Less to carry, less to lose – that’s a win in my book.

I agree with your point about the card slot distribution. As someone who primarily uses full-size SD cards for my DSLRs, having more of those slots would be a huge plus. Perhaps a future iteration could offer different configurations for varying photographer needs? Still, a neat concept overall.

How well do you think the IP54 rating holds up in practical, less-than-ideal conditions? Like, if you’re caught in a light drizzle or if it gets a bit dusty on location? The silicone sleeve seems promising for that protection.

That integrated USB-C cable is such a smart design choice! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve arrived at a shoot only to realize I forgot my reader’s cable. Little details like that truly make a product shine in real-world use.

Wow, this Llano R404 sounds like an absolute game-changer! I’m constantly juggling a separate case and reader, and having them combined into one robust unit with fast transfer speeds is exactly what I need. The integrated cable is genius too. Definitely putting this on my wish list!
