The Konstruktor is an SLR camera. If you buy the 35mm camera from Lomography, you don’t get a ready-made camera, but a kit. So you have to assemble this kit before using it for the first time.
The kit is recommended for ages 12 and up. The construction time is given with 1 to 2 hours. The camera was introduced by Lomography in June 2013.
The Konstruktor is made of black plastic, so it is not a heavyweight. The housing corresponds to a classic SLR.
The light shaft viewfinder and the film spoolers to the right and left of it are striking. The camera itself is black, but can be customized, e.g. with the included stickers, depending on your mood.
The Konstruktor works completely manually without power. By default, the Konstruktor comes with a 50 mm fixed focal length. Of course, the lens has to be assembled by yourself. This has a fixed aperture of f/10 and is manually focused. By turning the lens and looking through the viewfinder, you can focus on your subject. The range is from 0.5 meters to infinity.
Speaking of the viewfinder, the Konstruktor is equipped with a shaft viewfinder. That is, you look through the lens from above, as with most TLRs (e.g. On theLubitel, through the viewfinder. A small magnifying glass should make focusing a bit easier.
The lens can be exchanged, but the mount is a special one for the Lomography camera.
With the film choice, for the constructor can, one from a quite large offer range, since the SLR uses 35mm film (eBay / Amazon*). It doesn’t matter if you use color negative, slide, redscale or black and white film.
However, you should pay attention to the sensitivity depending on the light conditions. On a sunny day, a film with a low sensitivity (ISO 100, or a redscale is advisable. If you are shooting indoors in less light, for example, an ISO 800 film would be more appropriate.
The Konstruktor does not have a built-in light meter. But this is not really needed because, as already mentioned, the aperture is fixed and there is not much choice of exposure times. With a switch you can change between N (= 1/80 second) and B (shutter stays open as long as the shutter release is pressed).
The Konstruktor does not have a connection for a cable release or a tripod.
The kit consists of one macro lens and one close-up lens. With the two lenses of the Konstruktor DIY Close-Up & Macro Lens Kit, you can take close-up and macro photos with a distance of only 5 cm from your subject.
