The Konica Pop-AF is a 35mm autofocus viewfinder camera manufactured by Konica. It is characterized by its ease of use and compact design and was designed for everyday use. The model is, of course, no longer produced.
Lens
The Konica Pop-AF features a built-in Konica Lens 34mm f/3.8, consisting of three elements in three groups. The lens offers a moderate wide-angle, suitable for a variety of shooting situations. There is no filter thread.
The camera uses an active infrared autofocus system that operates in the range of 1.5 meters to infinity. There is no zone focus or manual focus available.
Exposure Settings
Exposure on the Konica Pop-AF is controlled automatically by a CdS cell. The camera offers no manual exposure settings. For daylight shots, an aperture of F6.3 is used, while using the flash sets the aperture to F3.8. The shutter speed is fixed at 1/125 second. A low light warning lamp (LED) activates at EV11 (ISO 100) to warn of underexposure.
Flash System
The Konica Pop-AF has a built-in electronic flash. The flash is simple to operate and is activated manually via a switch. If the red warning lamp lights up when the shutter button is half-pressed, the flash must be used. Once the flash-ready lamp lights up, the flash is ready, and you can take the picture.
Additional Features
The Konica Pop-AF offers several additional features that enhance usability. It has a self-timer. A tripod mount is present to attach the camera to a tripod. Film transport is automatic (motorized) when the shutter is released. The film is rewound automatically once the rewind switch is activated; the rewind motor switches off automatically.
Dimensions and Weight
The dimensions of the Konica Pop-AF are 131 x 71 x 49 mm. The weight of the camera is 290 grams, without batteries.
Batteries
The camera requires two AA batteries (eBay / Amazon*) to operate. This battery type is very easy to find.
Film Recommendations
The Konica Pop-AF supports film speeds of ISO 100, 200, 400, and 1000. This is set manually on the front of the camera.
For general outdoor shooting in good light, an ISO 100 film is ideal. For cloudy days or indoor shots, an ISO 400 film is recommended. For fast-moving subjects, such as in sports photography, or in low-light situations, an ISO 1000 film can be used.
A good color film is the Kodak Gold 200*. This film delivers solid results with the Konica camera.
The number of pictures per roll of film depends on the specific film roll (typically 24 or 36 exposures). Film loading is done via a Konica auto-loading system.
Quick Start Guide
- Insert Batteries: Open the battery compartment and insert two 1.5-volt LR6 dry cells (AA size) with the correct polarity.
- Load Film: Open the back of the camera. Insert the film cassette into the film chamber. Insert the film end into the take-up spool up to the red mark. Close the back cover.
- Set ISO: Set the film speed (ISO) according to the film sensitivity used.
- Prepare Camera: Press the shutter button three to four times until the number “1” appears in the frame counter.
- Take Pictures: Align the autofocus frame on the main subject and press the shutter button halfway to lock focus. Press the shutter button fully to take the photo. Use the flash if necessary.
- Unload Film: After the last shot is taken, the shutter button will be locked. Activate the rewind switch. The film will rewind automatically. Remove the film from the camera once the rewinding process is complete.
