The Kodak Ektachrome Dyna EX 400 was a color slide film that belonged to the Kodak Ektachrome Dyna EX film family and the Kodak Select Series. This film was particularly available in Asia, especially in Japan.
It was probably an existing film material that was marketed in the West under a different name, and not a completely new development. Today this film is no longer produced, but individual remaining stocks can still be found occasionally.
The film’s light sensitivity is classified as ISO 400, which made it a standard film for color photography. Despite the film’s reliable quality, it was less known for exceptional image aesthetics. Users could use it for both hobby photography and serious projects – an all-rounder for everyday use.
Development of the film
The Ektachrome Dyna EX 400 had to be developed using the standardized E6 process that is offered in many photo labs. This process ensures brilliant colors and a high durability of the slides. After development, the images could either be presented in the traditional way with a slide projector or digitized with a scanner – an ideal solution for archiving and further processing.
Availability and alternatives
The film was only available in 35 mm format and allowed 36 shots per roll. Thanks to the integrated DX code, modern cameras could automatically detect the film’s light sensitivity and set it correctly. Manufacturers such as Agfa, Olympus and Zenit offered compatible 35 mm cameras that were perfectly suited to this film.
Since the Kodak Ektachrome Dyna EX 400 is no longer produced, photographers have to resort to alternatives. One possible option is the modern Kodak Ektachrome E100G *, which is also available in 35 mm format.
Storage and Usability
Most of the Ektachrome Dyna EX 400 still available today is likely to have already passed the expiration date specified by the manufacturer. However, this date only provides a reference for the guaranteed quality of the film. Older films can still be used, but a slight loss of light sensitivity cannot be ruled out.
