The Harman Phoenix 200 is a color negative film produced by Harman and is characterized by its special aesthetics. It is the first color film to be manufactured entirely at HARMAN’s technology factory in Mobberley, marking a significant milestone for the company. It was presented in 2023.

Technical details and handling

The film is designed for color photos and has an ISO value of 200, which indicates its sensitivity to light. However, it can be used flexibly between ISO 100 and 400, showing its best results in good, even light. On brighter days or when taking photos against the light, halation may occur.

For best results, we recommend metering the midtones to preserve both shadow and highlight detail. Over or under exposure should be avoided.

Development and further processing

After exposure, the film is developed using the C-41 process, which is offered by many photo laboratories. After development, prints can be made in various sizes or the negatives can be digitized. Both scanning services from photo laboratories and scanners for home use are available for digitization.

Unique aesthetics and experimental character

The Harman Phoenix 200 produces high-contrast images with strong, visible grain and bold, vibrant colors. It differs significantly from other color films and offers a unique analog aesthetic.

The film is experimental and can produce unexpected results, from uniquely colored negatives to random coating anomalies. This is part of the film’s charm and invites you to expect the unexpected and enjoy the experience.

Formats

The Harman Phoenix 200 is available in 35mm format (135), which is suitable for most analog cameras. A roll of film offers space for 36 exposures and is provided with a DX code that enables automatic detection of film speed in many cameras. A roll currently costs around 13 euros in Germany (2024).

A variety of camera manufacturers offer models that are compatible with 35mm film. Popular brands such as Leica, Nikon, Canon, Olympus and Pentax offer a wide range of 35mm cameras, both older models and modern versions. There are also numerous other manufacturers that produce cameras for the 35mm format, including affordable options for beginners.

The choice of camera depends on individual preferences and the desired range of functions. Whether a simple viewfinder camera, an SLR camera or a rangefinder camera – the Harman Phoenix 200 can be used in a wide variety of camera models, enabling a wide range of creative expression options.

Alternative for the film

If the Harman Phoenix 200 is not available, there is no direct alternative with identical features, but the Kodak Gold 200* would be a possible option for photographers looking for ISO 200 color negative film. It offers good color rendering and is suitable for a variety of lighting conditions. However, it does not produce the same unique aesthetic and distinctive grain as the Phoenix 200.

Medium format variant

In September 2024, a good year after the introduction of the 35mm film, the medium format variant of the film was introduced. The 120 roll film can be used in almost all medium format cameras. In 2024, a roll will cost around 14 euros in Germany.
