The Ilford Ilfocolor 400 Vintage Tone is a color negative film for 35mm cameras designed to give photographs a distinctive vintage look. This look is inspired by 1960s aesthetics and features washed out colors, soft contrasts and a certain fuzziness.
With a sensitivity of ISO 400, the film allows shooting in various lighting conditions, both outdoors and indoors. Each film is equipped with DX encoding, which enables automatic exposure adjustment in compatible cameras.
The Ilford Ilfocolor 400 Vintage Tone is particularly suitable for photographers who want to give their images a nostalgic charm. It can be used for different genres, such as portrait, landscape or street photography. Film offers a creative way to differentiate yourself from digital photography and achieve unique, artistic results.
It is important to note that the vintage look of the Ilford Ilfocolor 400 Vintage Tone is deliberate and does not meet the standards of modern color photography. Coloring may vary and may differ from the reproduction of other films.
Development
For optimal results, it is recommended that the film be developed professionally as the C-41 process used to develop color negative film requires specialized knowledge and equipment. With the necessary accessories, it can also be processed in a home laboratory.
Available film format and compatible cameras
The Ilford Ilfocolor 400 Vintage Tone is only available in 35mm format (135). A roll of film usually holds 36 exposures. The 35mm format is widely used and is supported by a variety of cameras.
35mm cameras with manual settings are particularly suitable as they allow precise control over exposure and focus, which can be an advantage for experimental work with the Phoenix 200. Popular models include the Yashica Electro 35, the Olympus OM series, the Canon AE-1 or the Nikon FM2.
But many other cameras, both older and newer models, are also compatible with the 35mm format. These include both single-lens reflex cameras (SLR) and more compact viewfinder cameras. The only important thing is that the camera supports the 135 format.
The Ilfocolor 400 is equipped with a DX code that allows modern cameras to automatically detect the film speed (ISO) and set it accordingly. For older cameras without DX code recognition, the ISO value must be set manually.
Alternative for the film
If Ilford color film is not available, there are some alternatives that have similar properties or at least provide a good starting point for experiments.
A possible option would be the Kodak Ultramax 400*. This film is also a color negative film with an ISO value of 200 and offers good color reproduction and a good balance between sharpness and grain. It is widely used and available in most camera stores.
