The Fuji Eterna Vivid 160T is a color negative film that was launched in 2007 by the Japanese company Fujifilm. This film was part of the Fujifilm range for cinema films before Fujifilm finally stopped producing film material for the film industry on March 31, 2013. Due to its special properties, the Eterna Vivid 160T was particularly valued in film productions.
The film is characterized by intense colors, high contrast and exceptional image sharpness. This was achieved through Fujifilm’s innovative technology, which optimized the structure of the silver halide crystals on the nanoscale. This refinement resulted in an extremely fine grain that minimized stray light and increased the sharpness of the image.
In addition, the special development of the film ensured improved colors and a clear, detailed representation. The Eterna Vivid 160T was also known for its optimized telecine properties, which enabled noise minimization and higher quality when digitizing the films.
The material is designed for production under artificial light. Unlike with digital cameras, the white balance of film material cannot be changed. Therefore, there are different films for different lighting conditions. In artificial light, the Eterna has a sensitivity of ISO 160. In daylight with a filter, it is ISO 100.
Application and well-known productions
The Eterna Vivid 160T was used in numerous film productions and left a lasting impression with its image quality. Films that were at least partially shot with this film include Slumdog Millionaire, J. Edgar and The King’s Speech. Its properties made it particularly attractive for films that required intense colors and sharp contrasts.
Availability and alternatives
The film was offered in 35mm and 16mm formats. Today, the 35mm material can be found in some 35mm cartridges for analog photography. The 35mm film has the type designation 8543. For the 16mm format, it is 8643.
With the discontinuation of Fujifilm motion picture films, the Eterna Vivid 160T is no longer regularly available. The corresponding film material from Kodak is an alternative.
