Martax Film Lab 500T

The Martax Film Lab 500T is a color negative film produced by Kodak. The company itself does not sell this film directly to end customers; instead, the film material is sold through third parties. In this case, Martax Film Lab is a photo lab from Helsinki (Finland).

At its core, the Martax Film Lab 500T is based on the Kodak VISION3 500T, a film that was originally developed for professional cinema film production.

Kodak normally only offers the VISION3 500T on large film reels. These are cut for the Martax Film Lab 500T and packed in handy 35mm cartridges that fit into analog cameras.

Special features of the VISION3 500T

An outstanding feature of the VISION3 500T is its design for artificial light (tungsten). Analog cameras do not have a digital option for flexibly adjusting the white balance. Therefore, it is crucial to use films like this if you want to achieve accurate colors under artificial light conditions.

Of course, the Martax Film Lab 500T can also be used in daylight. However, color shifts often occur, which can be corrected by using special filters. However, these filters affect the film’s sensitivity to light, so it is necessary to adjust the exposure accordingly.

Developing the Martax Film Lab 500T

The Martax Film Lab 500T must be developed using the ECN-2 process. This is due to a special coating (Remjet) that protects the film from damage in cinema cameras. During the development process, this layer must be removed. On the other hand, if the film is developed using the standard C-41 process, residues of the coating can contaminate the chemicals and render them unusable.

Some specialized photo labs offer ECN-2 development. It is advisable to clarify in advance whether the preferred lab offers this service. Alternatively, there are variants of the Kodak VISION3 500T where the Remjet layer has already been removed. These are easier to process, but are often harder to obtain.

Application and camera compatibility

The Martax Film Lab 500T is suitable for use in conventional 35mm cameras. Brands such as Minolta, Olympus, Nikon, Leica or Konica offer excellent models for this format. The only important thing is that the camera supports the 35mm format.

Cameras that either automatically detect the film sensitivity or offer a manual mode are particularly practical. This allows the film’s potential to be optimally exploited. Around 36 images can usually be taken on a roll of film, although this depends slightly on the camera used.
