The Wolfen NC500 is a color negative film from the traditional ORWO brand, representing a unique offering on the current market as it is produced at the historical film production site in Bitterfeld-Wolfen.

Unlike many other current films, this is not relabeled material from major competitors, but an independent emulsion based on classic Agfa cinema formulas.

With a nominal sensitivity of ISO 400, the film is a versatile all-rounder, delivering reliable results in cloudy skies and twilight as well as in bright daylight. Photographically, the NC500 is characterized by a unique aesthetic that clearly differs from modern consumer films.

The images impress with a desaturated, almost nostalgic look featuring a visible but pleasant grain structure and often cooler green tones, lending the shots a cinematic character.

To ensure the quality of this special emulsion in the long term, unexposed material should be stored in a dry and cool place, ideally in the refrigerator at around 8 to 13 degrees Celsius. Prompt development after exposure is also advisable to avoid color shifts or quality loss of the latent image.

Developing the Wolfen NC500

Developing the Wolfen NC500 itself is very straightforward, as it is processed using the widely used and standardized C-41 process. A key advantage of this film over other cinema films is the absence of the black Remjet protective layer on the back. Because of this feature, the film can be easily developed in any professional photo lab or sent for development through standard drugstore services without the need for an expensive special process.

After chemical development, you get back the negative strips, which can then be digitized or traditionally printed onto photographic paper.

Scanning the negatives is particularly suitable for a hybrid workflow, as the film material’s somewhat flatter contrast curve offers plenty of room for digital post-processing in programs like Photoshop or Lightroom. Digitization also makes it easy to share the characterful images on social media.

Film Format and Cameras

The Wolfen NC500 is currently only manufactured in 35mm format, with a roll holding 36 exposures. It can be used in a variety of cameras from different manufacturers such as Nikon, Minolta, or Canon.

When using it, however, it should be noted that the film cartridges often do not have a DX code. Therefore, with fully automatic compact cameras, you should check the ISO detection, while on manual SLR cameras, the value can be easily set by hand.
