Walgreens, an American drugstore chain, offered photographic film for amateur photographers under its own brand until the 2000s. The Walgreens Studio 35 400 color negative film was one of them. Originally, the color film was manufactured by the German company Agfa. However, later Japanese material from Fujifilm was used in the cartridge of the film.
The Studio 35 400 film is suitable for color photography and has a nominal ISO 400 sensitivity, which indicates how sensitive the film stock is to light. An ISO of 400 is optimal for general photography and is supported by many exposure meters.
Exposure of expired film material
Unexposed material from discontinued film often has an expired expiration date, which is not uncommon. However, it should not be considered the sole indicator of the film’s usability, even if the manufacturer has guaranteed its quality up to a certain date.
If older film stock has been stored under poor storage conditions, this can result in underexposed images as the film’s light sensitivity decreases. Therefore, it is recommended that you set a lower ISO on the camera to compensate for this and ensure adequate exposure.
Other factors such as higher film grain, lower contrasts, or color shifts may also affect image quality. However, proper storage of unexposed film stock can help ensure the quality of subsequent photographs.
Developing the film
Preservation of exposed film images requires performance of the C-41 process, which is available at most photo labs. The standardized sequence of the development process is identical for all photo labs.
In Germany, large drugstore chains provide a film developing service that results in film strips with captured photos.
In addition, there is the option of making prints of the developed images in various sizes or scanning them for digital applications, which are offered by many labs as an optional extra.
Digitization
Digitizing analog photos can be done in a number of ways. One way is to use a scanner. This task can be done by many photo labs, but it is also possible to purchase a scanner for private use. After digitization, there is an option to either digitally edit the photos or save them in printed form.
Availability and alternatives
The Walgreens Studio 35 400 is specifically designed for use in 35mm cameras. Manufacturers such as Lomo, Nikon, and Agfa also offer cameras that are suitable for 35mm format. There are also alternative cameras that allow the use of 35mm film.
The film has been marked with a DX code on the cartridge. On some camera models, the film speed can be automatically detected using this code.
The Color film is no longer produced. A replacement for 35mm film is Kodak Ultramax 400*.
