The Pilot series from Wotancraft has been one of the well-known names among photographers looking for a robust and well-thought-out camera shoulder bag for several years. For this review, I took a look at the black leather version with a capacity of 3.5 liters and tested it in everyday use with my Fujifilm X-E5.
Dimensions & Material
Upon first unboxing, it's immediately noticeable that the bag appears somewhat larger in reality than one might expect from the product photos online. With external dimensions of approximately 20 x 18.5 x 11.5 centimeters and an empty weight of around 660 grams including the shoulder strap, the leather version brings noticeably more substance than the lighter fabric variant.
The black leather conveys a very grippy, firm impression and gives the bag a pronounced structure. As a result, the bag always maintains its firm shape and does not collapse in on itself even when empty. The finishing of the edges and seams is clean, and the leather leaves a pleasant feel. Additionally, the bag is very photogenic.
The manufacturer also takes a pleasantly restrained approach to branding. Instead of flashy lettering or colorful emblems, there is only a subtle embossing on the leather. This unobtrusive design supports the timeless appearance and ensures that the bag doesn't immediately stand out as a piece of equipment from a specific brand while on the go.
The practical handle on the top is a positive feature. It allows you to quickly grab the bag from the car or the table and carry it comfortably by hand for short distances without having to use the long shoulder strap each time.
On the back of the bag, there is an external compartment with a weather-resistant Aquaguard zipper. This solution offers the clear advantage that the contents remain reliably protected from penetrating moisture during a rain shower. At the same time, one must consider that the rubberized surface and the plastic parts used are subject to a certain amount of wear compared to natural leather or classic metal zippers and are not built to last forever.
Another point concerns the buckles and fastening elements on the shoulder strap. Here, Wotancraft uses lightweight plastic instead of metal. This noticeably saves weight in daily use, which can be a welcome factor for a leather bag. On the other hand, solid metal fittings would have more appropriately underscored the quality of the leather and visually matched the overall concept better.
On the other hand, the integrated clamp buckle for quick length adjustment of the strap is very practical. With a simple hand movement, the strap can be infinitely shortened or lengthened, allowing you to quickly pull the bag closer to your body while walking or loosen it again for access.
It's also worth highlighting that the shoulder strap can be completely removed and replaced if needed. The additional shoulder pad can also be easily removed if you prefer to carry the bag with a slim strap.
Compartments / Pockets
The main compartment offers sufficient space for a compact setup. The Fujifilm X-E5 fits effortlessly with an attached lens, and there is still enough room for two prime lenses, a flash, and useful accessories.
The compartment can be divided using the included divider. This divider can be positioned to create two levels. For example, you can store a lens on one side and place the camera on top of it.
A key advantage of the main compartment's design is the complete absence of zippers on the top access opening. The bag closes via an overlapping flap with a magnetic Fidlock closure. This closure can be pushed to the side and released with one hand with a short pull on the tab, while when closing, it almost glides by itself into the mechanical lock thanks to the integrated magnets and clicks securely into place.
This allows the compartment to be opened and closed not only quickly but also almost silently. Especially in quiet environments like museums, churches, or during discreet street photography, you can access the camera without the surroundings hearing a loud zipper noise.
In addition to the main compartment, the bag has flat zippered pockets on the front and back. These pockets can hold memory cards, spare batteries, filters, or flat documents.
One point of criticism for me is the color of the interior lining. Both the front and back pockets use a dark interior lining. A lighter lining would have been much more advantageous here, as you could find and identify small black accessories like lens caps or memory card holders much faster in poor lighting conditions.
In Practice
In everyday photography with the Fujifilm X-E5, the Wotancraft Pilot Leather 3.5L proves to be a reliable companion that effectively protects the camera equipment from impacts and weather conditions.
When carrying, it's positively noticeable how well the padded shoulder piece distributes the weight. Even during multi-hour photo walks through the city, wearing comfort remains at a high level without the strap digging in uncomfortably.
Moreover, the firm base proves to be a real advantage in everyday life: when you place the bag on a table, park bench, or the floor, it stays stably upright and doesn't tip over. This makes safely inserting and removing the camera much easier.
Access to the camera body also works smoothly and intuitively in the daily workflow. Thanks to the generous opening of the bag flap, the Fujifilm X-E5 can be grabbed quickly with one hand without getting caught on annoying edges or Velcro fasteners.
The classic leather design has an unobtrusive appearance that blends well into everyday life visually and doesn't immediately give the impression of a typical camera bag. Nevertheless, I noticed a few details in daily use that could be optimized in a future version.
In everyday use, I miss a quick-release buckle on the shoulder strap that would allow the strap to be detached easily. When wearing a thick winter jacket or wanting to quickly set the bag down without having to awkwardly lift it over your head, such a buckle would be a real comfort gain. As it is, you always have to thread the bag over your shoulder.
On the side of the bag, there is an attachment eyelet for additional accessories or keys. It would be more practical if the manufacturer had attached a corresponding eyelet on both sides. This would allow you to adapt the bag more flexibly to your own carrying habits, regardless of whether you carry it on the left or right side of your body.
In practice, the combination of storage space and rigid construction also leads to a noticeable effect. The firm leather protects the camera from external pressure, but at the same time ensures that the bag always maintains its full depth on the body, even when you're only carrying a small camera and no additional equipment.
Verdict on the Wotancraft Pilot Leather 3.5L
With the Pilot Leather 3.5L, Wotancraft delivers a solidly crafted bag that combines a classic leather look with modern features. Its clear strengths include the almost silent access to the main compartment, the modular design of the shoulder strap, and the reliable protection of the equipment thanks to the firm padding.
The bag is especially suitable for photographers who want to transport a compact mirrorless system along with one or two small prime lenses and some accessories, and who value a shape-stable, weather-protected leather bag that leaves a timeless impression in everyday life.
Is the Wotancraft Pilot Leather 3.5L the perfect everyday camera bag for me personally? Unfortunately, no. It's hard to pinpoint it to a single point, but a significant factor lies in the relationship between external dimensions and shape stability.
The storage space itself is well-sized for a compact setup like the Fujifilm X-E5 and offers some additional room for accessories. It's precisely this extra space, which you don't always necessarily fill in everyday life, that, combined with the shape-stable leather, makes the bag feel a bit too large and bulky on the body for my personal requirements. You always carry the full volume around with you, even when you're only out with a small camera.
Even though it's not the bag for me, I can only recommend it. The craftsmanship and material selection are well done, but for me personally, it just didn't quite click with this bag.
