The built-in autofocus works with good precision. Subjects are reliably focused, and inaccuracies are pleasantly rare in everyday photography. However, it is noticeable that the focusing speed is somewhat slow.
The technical reason for this lies in the optical construction of the pancake housing. Instead of internal focusing with a single, light lens group, Viltrox uses overall focusing. A compact, gear-based stepper motor must move the entire optical block during focusing, causing the inner barrel to extend forward and backward by a few millimeters. This mechanical process requires moving more mass and takes a bit more time than linear drives.
However, by omitting complex internal focus mechanisms, the manufacturer manages to keep the lens particularly flat with a depth of less than twenty-four millimeters. The manual focus ring is relatively narrow by design. For slightly wider fingers, it is a bit too narrow. However, this hardly matters in everyday photography. In contrast, the design of the aperture control is very pleasant. The existing aperture ring on the housing is a significant gain for handling. In my opinion, full-frame lenses far too rarely have a dedicated aperture ring.
The direct tactile feedback when changing the aperture conveys a classic photography feel and noticeably speeds up operation. You can select the aperture value directly by hand without having to use the camera's dial or switch to the menu.
Another thoughtful detail in everyday use concerns the included lens cap. It is based on a magnetic attachment. I usually do without lens caps on most lenses. When lenses are safely stored in a camera bag, they usually don't need the extra protection, except for a few particularly sensitive lenses.
Above all, I don't use conventional lens caps because they are often fiddly and annoying to attach. The magnetic implementation on the Viltrox 26mm f/2.8 EVO is very elegantly solved. The cap snaps cleanly onto the front of the lens by itself and can be just as easily removed.

Towards the outer edges, detail rendering naturally decreases at open aperture, but it noticeably recovers by stopping down slightly to f/4 or f/5.6. At f/4, the optical optimum is also achieved across the entire image field.
In uncorrected RAW files, f/2.8 shows pronounced vignetting and slight barrel distortion, which is unavoidable for such a flat pancake design. However, by using internal lens profiles or automatic correction in image editing, this light falloff at the edges is reduced to a completely unobtrusive level.
Chromatic aberrations and color fringing at contrast edges remain pleasantly low. The lens also handles backlit shots well, as the special coating of the lenses effectively minimizes disturbing reflections and lens flares.
