DM Paradies 200 35mm - Review - 05

No question, analog photography is not cheap. When you look at the prices of a roll of 35mm film like the Kodak Portra 400 and its ilk, you quickly lose the fun of shooting, especially at the beginning. For a special occasion, you can spend a bit more, but if you shoot a lot or just want to experiment, you'll appreciate a cheap alternative.

One such is the DM Paradies 200. It is a color negative film with a sensitivity of ISO 200, sold under the own brand of the German drugstore chain DM-Markt.

It is very likely manufactured by Kodak, so you don't get cheap junk. Price-wise, it's under 1 euro per roll, which makes a price of around 2 cents per image without development.

Nevertheless, you don't get cheap results with this film. It delivers nice colors with good contrasts and a pleasant grain. Of course, you shouldn't expect too much, it just delivers reliable images, nothing more and nothing less. It's an everyday film. If you want loud colors, strong contrasts or the like, you should rather go for a different film.

With the DM Paradies 200, you get a solid film for little money. The biggest disadvantages of the color negative film are certainly that it only exists for 35mm cameras. If you need a bit more sensitivity, you can also safely go for the DM Paradies 400.

Tip: If you don't have a black and white film at hand, the DM Paradies 200 is also excellent as a monochrome film. To do this, expose it normally and instead of sending it to the lab, just throw it into your own black and white developer. Suitable here is e.g. Rodinal or Caffenol (Caffenol is a developer you make yourself from instant coffee.). If you already have the development equipment and a scanner, this is a very cheap way to shoot analog.
