The Nikon FM is a 35mm camera. It belongs to the group of compact SLR cameras. It was presented in the 70s and was supposed to compete with the popular Olympus OM system.
The lenses of the 35mm camera are interchangeable. Lenses with a Nikon F bayonet can be used. In 1959 the Nikon F bayonet of the Japanese manufacturer was introduced. Later, an autofocus functionality was added.
Besides Nikon, lenses from Sigma, Tokina, Tamron and others are also produced. But not all modern camera lenses can be used with the old film cameras. You have to focus the lens manually.
The 35mm photo camera has a built-in light meter. It can use the exposure for films with a sensitivity from ISO 12 to ISO 3200. The correct exposure is measured through the lens. The shutter speed and aperture can be selected by the photographer.
The camera comes with a bulb setting. A external flash can be connected via the PC flash port or Hot Shoe. The Nikon FM comes with a self-timer. There is also a connector for a cable release and a thread for a tripod.
The dimensions of the Nikon FM are 14,2 x 8,9 x 6 cm. It brings 590 grams on the scales. The power source of the 35mm camera are two LR44 batteries (eBay / Amazon*).
Films for the Nikon FM
Without 35mm films, the Nikon FM does not work. 35mm films are still produced by different manufacturers. A possible film for color photography is the Kodak Ultramax 400*. One option for b/w images is the Ilford FP4 Plus*.
The color film is being developed in the C-41 process. This is offered by almost every photo lab.
The exposure area of the Nikon FM has a size of 24 mm x 36 mm. The film in the camera must be winded manually, as there is no automatic film transport.
The 35mm photo camera can only be bought used. The prices for the Nikon FM vary depending on the condition. For a working copy you usually pay 70 to 120 Euro. With a lens, the value can be a little higher.
