Nikon F-401

The Nikon F-401 is a camera from Nikon from the late 80s. It is a single lens reflex camera. The model was positioned for beginners. Later followed the F-401S with a reworked autofocus module.

The lenses of the Nikon F-401 can be exchanged. It features a Nikon F lens mount. This lens mount was developed in the 1950s. Later, an autofocus function was added. Lenses are not just made by Nikon itself but also other brands. Beware that not all modern camera lenses can be used with the old film cameras. You don not have to focus manually with the 35mm camera. The Nikon F-401 comes with an autofocus.

Photography is made easier by the built-in exposure meter. It was designed for films with a speed of ISO 25 to ISO 5000. The film speed is read by the DX code on the film cartridge from the camera. As with most SLR cameras, exposure is measured trough the lens. The aperture and shutter speed is set automatically and cannot be changed. The aperture and shutter speed can be freely set by the photographer.

The Bulb mode can be used for long exposures. The shutter stays open as long as desired. The built-in flash can be used in low light conditions. An external flash can be connected via hot shoe. The 35mm camera comes with a thread for a tripod. A self-timer is also built in.

Films for the Nikon F-401

The Nikon F-401 is designed for 35mm films. 35mm films are still produced today. They can be developed in most photo laboratories. Beautiful 35mm films for color or black-and-white shots are the Agfaphoto Vista 400* and the Kodak T-Max 100*.

The color film is processed in the C-41 process. This development process is offered by most laboratories.

The negatives of Nikon F-401 have a size of 24 mm x 36 mm. A normal 35mm film fits about 36 pictures at this size. The film is automatically transported by the camera.
