The Nikon 28Ti is a compact camera. It was manufactured by the Japanese manufacturer from 1994 to 1998. It can be counted to the noble compact cameras. The range of functions is very similar to the Nikon 35Ti. The biggest difference to the premium camera is the lens.
The camera comes with a fixed lens. The designation of the lens is “Nikkor 28mm 1:2.8”. The focal length is 28mm and the maximum aperture is f/2.8. It is constructed of 7 glass elements in 5 groups. To focus the lens an autofocus system was built into the camera.
The Nikon 28Ti has an exposure meter. It is designed for films from ISO 25 to ISO 5000. The film speed is read out via the DX code. If this code is missing on the cartridge, ISO 100 is set.
The exposure settings are automatically determined by the 35mm camera in program mode. The aperture number can be freely selected in the aperture preselection of the 35mm camera. The exposure time, on the other hand, is automatically fixed.
The Nikon 28Ti has a bulb mode. In this mode long time exposures are possible with the camera. The camera has a built-in flash. This offers different flash modes. One of the modes is designed to reduce the appearance of red eyes in pictures. The Nikon 28Ti has a self-timer and a tripod thread.
The camera with its black titanium housing weighs 315 grams according to the manual. The dimensions are 11.8 x 6.6 x 3.6 cm grams. A CR 123A battery (eBay / Amazon*) is responsible for the power supply.
Very noticeable on the camera is the very old-fashioned looking display, especially for the 90s. Clock hands indicate aperture, distance, frame rate and exposure correction.
Films for the Nikon 28Ti
In the Nikon 28Ti, 35mm films are exposed according to the instruction manual. The film is automatically rewound by the 35mm camera.
One possibility for color images is the Kodak Portra 400* and the Ilford Delta 100* for black and white photos. Both films are perfect for the camera and allow for great pictures.
The development process for colour film is the C-41 process. This is offered by almost every photo lab. The black and white film must be processed in a suitable developer for this type of films. You have full control over the developing process if you do the developing yourself. The suitable chemistry and the accessories can be easily ordered online.
Value of the camera
The new price of the Nikon 28Ti was quite high. The target group were probably solvent amateur photographers and professional photographers who should use it as a second camera. The used prices today are still a bit higher than the Nikon 35Ti, probably because of the smaller available quantity. For a working copy you can put an amount between 700 and 1200 Euro on the table.
As long as there are still films for the camera, the prices will probably rise rather than fall. This also has to do with the fact that this type of camera is much more difficult to repair due to the fragile electronics and therefore a repair can be very expensive.
