In summer 2016, Fujifilm introduced a new Instax film format; now, with the Fujifilm Instax Square SQ10, the first camera for the instant format is available.
The new instant camera differs significantly from the two previous formats/cameras: the SQ10 comes with a built-in digital sensor and a color display on the back. This naturally changes the way you shoot with an instant camera, but also opens up new possibilities.
With the TFT display, photographers can better compose their images and see the result immediately. Additionally, you can adjust color and brightness, apply filters, retake pictures, and print multiple copies. Long exposure and double exposure are also possible.
Fujifilm promises significantly better image quality thanks to the technical specifications, especially in low light conditions.
The CMOS sensor has a sensitivity range of ISO 100 to ISO 1600, the lens has a maximum aperture of f/2.4, and can focus as close as 10 cm to the subject.
A built-in flash, self-timer, and tripod mount are also included. Images can optionally be saved to a micro-SD card (not included). The camera is powered by a rechargeable battery.
Overall, the SQ10 leans more towards being a printer rather than a traditional instant camera. Whether the charm of instant photography is lost remains to be seen.
The idea of merging an instant camera with a digital camera is not entirely new. Under the Polaroid brand, similar cameras are sold, such as the Polaroid Instant Snap (Amazon). These print images on Zink paper, a thermal printing paper that requires no additional ink.

Films
The Instax Square format was already introduced in summer 2016. It strongly resembles the Polaroid SX-70 / Polaroid 600 format. The actual instant photo measures 86 x 72 mm. The captured image is square and measures 62 x 62 mm.
We'll see if there will be a black-and-white film for the Square format or if it will remain color only. It will also be exciting to see if more cameras without digital functions will follow. A perfect addition would be something like a Polaroid SX-70 or Polaroid SLR 680.

Availability
The Fujifilm Instax Square SQ10 is expected to be available from the end of May. The price, according to the manufacturer, is 289 euros.
