Modern lenses are often designed to render every scene as flawlessly and clinically clean as possible. Those who enjoy visible quirks in their images, on the other hand, prefer old treasures or constantly swap optics in their bag.
The manufacturer Brightin Star takes a different approach with the new 50mm F2 Tri-Sight, packing various visual characteristics directly into a single housing for mirrorless full-frame cameras.
The heart of this manual prime lens is its transformable optics, consisting of seven lenses in six groups. By shifting individual lens groups inside, you can deliberately control aberrations such as spherical aberration and astigmatism.
A switch on the barrel lets you choose between three different modes. The setting called Smooth produces a gentle soft focus with a delicate shimmer, ideal for classic portraits. If you prefer a balanced and contemporary sharpness, switch to Prime mode. The third option, named Foams, conjures up the popular bubble bokeh with emphasized edges in the blurred background.
Since shifting the elements also slightly moves the focus point, the manufacturer has sensibly engraved three separate distance scales on the barrel.
If the three basic styles aren't enough, you'll find another playground on the back of the lens. A special slot accepts small inserts that change the shape of the aperture opening. With templates shaped like stars, clovers, butterflies, or rounded triangles, point light sources in the background transform into corresponding shapes. This reminds of creative paper craft projects, but here it works precisely right at the bayonet mount.
In terms of mechanical features, the standard lens is also well thought out for both photo and video shooting. The eleven-blade aperture can be adjusted continuously from open aperture f/2 to f/22, allowing exposure adjustments during filming without aperture clicks or brightness jumps.
For comfortable focusing, a small focus lever is provided, which can simply be unscrewed if needed. Additionally, the housing includes an integrated lens hood that can be pulled out for backlit situations and pushed back in for compact storage during transport.
The filter diameter at the front is a slim 37.5 millimeters, while the minimum focusing distance is 0.7 meters.
