Die Spiegelreflexkamera Alpha 5000 wurde 1986 von Minolta, einem japanischen Unternehmen, entwickelt und kam auf den Markt.

Minolta marketed a similar model worldwide, but it had different names. The Minolta 5000 was marketed internationally. In Japan, this model was offered as the Minolta Alpha 5000, while in the U.S. it was known as the Minolta Maxxum 5000.
