The Sony SEL2860 (Sony FE 28–60 mm f/4–5.6) is a compact zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras with the E-mount. It was introduced in 2020 together with the Sony Alpha 7C camera. The model covers a focal length range from 28 mm to 60 mm.
Due to its compact design, it is aimed at people looking for a lightweight setup for on the go. It is often offered as a kit lens together with smaller camera bodies, but can be used on all cameras in the Alpha series.
The construction is based on a retractable mechanism. Before the first shot, the lens ring must be manually rotated to extend the barrel. When stowed for transport, the housing measures only 45 mm in length. The total weight is 167 grams.
The housing is made of plastic but has a metal bayonet mount. The housing is protected against dust and moisture at the seals. There are no switches on the housing, for example for switching between manual and automatic focus. These functions are controlled via the camera menu.
The optical construction comprises 8 lenses in 7 groups. Among them are 3 aspherical elements that help correct optical aberrations. The maximum aperture starts at f/4 at the wide-angle end (28 mm) and drops to f/5.6 at the telephoto end (60 mm).
The aperture uses 7 rounded blades for a uniform opening. The minimum focusing distance is 30 cm at the wide-angle end and 45 cm at the telephoto end. The filter diameter is 40.5 mm, which allows the use of compact filter accessories.
A linear motor is used for autofocus. This enables quiet and continuous focusing tracking for photos and videos. Thanks to its dimensions, the lens is suitable for everyday use, travel, documentary and street photography.
Image sharpness is already usable in the center at open aperture, while the edges gain sharpness when stopping down. The lens does not offer its own optical image stabilization, so it is recommended to use it with cameras that have built-in image stabilization in the body.
