The Kodak Ultramax 400 is a color negative film. The film is produced by the American manufacturer in the United States. It is aimed at the consumer segment.
The sensitivity is specified as ISO 400. As typical for C-41 films, it can also be overexposed a bit without problems.
It is designed as an easy-to-use film for everyday use. Insert it into the camera and start shooting. Kodak recommends Ultramax 400 for shooting indoors, outdoors, with flash, and of subjects in motion. So it’s well suited for travel, vacations, or family gatherings. Kodak’s Ultramax 400 also cuts a fine figure in portrait shots.
It is developed using the C-41 process. That means it can be processed at practically any lab. Depending on the lab, you also get the matching prints at the same time.
For storage of the unexposed film, Kodak recommends a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius or less in a dark and dry place in the original package. After the film has been exposed, do not wait too long to develop it.
The Ultramax 400 is only available as 35mm film. It can be used in the vast majority of 35mm cameras. The cartridge of the film is provided with a DX code, which can be read by cameras and tells them the corresponding film speed.
You can buy Kodak Ultramax 400* online, but also in local stores. It is available as a single film with 24 or 36 frames, or in a pack of three.
Alternatives
An alternative to this film in medium format is the Kodak Portra 400* from Kodak. The Portra 400 is also available as 35mm film, but is significantly more expensive compared to the Ultramax. Whether the surcharge is worth it depends on the needs and the application.
Fujifilm’s counterpart to the Ultramax 400 is the Superia 400.
