The Kodak Automatic 35R4 is a viewfinder camera. The American company Kodak built the camera from 1965 to 1969. It is part of the Automatic series from Eastman Kodak.
The camera comes with a fixed focal length. The name of the manufacturer for the lens is “Kodak Ektanar 44mm f/2.8”. The focal length is 44 mm. The largest aperture is f/2.8. Focusing must be done manually. The closest focusing distance for this lens is 91 cm.
The 35mm camera has a built-in light meter. It is designed for films from ISO 10 to ISO 320. The photocells do not need an external power source, but they can lose accuracy over the years or even stop working completely.
The Kodak Automatic 35R4 has an automatic exposure control. The photographer cannot select aperture and exposure time. The exposure time can be set manually, there are two options (1/40 s and 1/80 s). The aperture is also freely selectable. The camera can be used with a tripod. There is no mode for long time exposures.
The Kodak Automatic 35R4 comes with a built-in connector for flashcubes. When using the flash, the shutter speed must be 1/40 second. Two N-batteries are required for operation. For normal photography the batteries are not needed.
Films for the Kodak Automatic 35R4
The Kodak Automatic 35R4 takes its pictures on 35mm film. This type of film is still in production and can be processed by most photo labs without any problems. A good choice of film is the Kodak Portra 160* for color images and the Kodak T-Max 100* for black and white images.
The color film is designed for development in the C-41 process. This development process is available at almost every photo lab. The black and white film must be processed in a suitable black and white developer.
The negatives of the 35mm photo camera are 24 mm x 36 mm. With the size of the exposure range, 36 photos usually fit on a normal film (135-36). The film in the camera has to be rewound manually, since there is no automatic film transport.
The Kodak Automatic 35R4 is no longer in production. The costs for the 35mm camera vary depending on accessories and condition. On average, you pay about 15-40 Euros for a model of this type.
