The Fujifilm Instax Square SQ1 is an instant camera from Fujifilm. It was introduced in September 2020. It is the third model for the Instax Square format. As of February 2021, it is offered in blue (Glacier Blue), orange (Terracotta Orange) and white (Chalk White).
The instant camera comes with a fixed lens. By turning the lens, it extends while turning the camera on. The lens is made up of two elements in two groups. The focal length is 65 mm and 75 mm respectively. The maximum aperture is specified as f/12.6, a fairly normal value for an instant camera. The focus of the lens cannot be changed. The minimum distance to the subject is 30 cm.
In general, there are no adjustment options on the camera. The exposure settings are set by the camera’s light meter. The only setting option is the selfie mode. In this, the camera zooms a bit, which means that the pictures are taken with a focal length of 75 mm. There is a small mirror right next to the lens for better positioning when taking a selfie.
The camera comes with a built-in flash. The range of the flash is specified as up to 2.2 meters. The recharge time is given as around 7.5 seconds. When the camera is ready, an LED lights up. The light is located on the front of the camera next to the viewfinder.
The camera weighs 390 grams. The dimensions are 13 x 11.8 x 5.7 cm. The power source of this model is two CR2 batteries (eBay / Amazon*). The batteries are included and last for about 300 pictures. There is no battery status indicator.
In addition to the batteries, the camera also comes with a wrist strap, a stick-on thumb grip and the manual.
Films for the Fujifilm Instax Square SQ1
Films are not included with the camera. The camera is designed for the Instax Square format. Like the camera, the films are also still manufactured. Here you have the choice between the color film (Instax Square Film*) and the black and white film (Instax Square Monochrome*). Additionally, there are some versions of the color film with differently designed frames.
The picture taken with the Fujifilm Instax Square SQ1 has a size of 62 mm x 62 mm. The rest is taken up by the frame. As with the Polaroid 600 pictures, the frame is slightly wider at the bottom and can also be written on.
In a pack of the instant film there is a cassette made of plastic in which the unexposed pictures are located. The number per cassette is ten pictures and packs with different numbers of cassettes are sold. After the shutter is released, the camera automatically ejects the image. Then the development time begins and after a short time, most of it can already be seen.
