Black and white films

Super panchromatic

Super panchromatic black and white films are a special type of black and white film characterized by their extended sensitivity to the visible light spectrum. Unlike orthochromatic films, which are insensitive to red light, and panchromatic films, which have some sensitivity to red light, superpanchromatic films are capable of recording the entire visible light spectrum, including the red range.

Technical properties

The enhanced sensitivity to red light is achieved through the use of special sensitizing dyes in the film material. These dyes enable the silver halide crystals in the film to react to longer wavelength light. This enables more accurate reproduction of red tones and an overall more natural tonal distribution in black and white images.

Superpanchromatic films typically offer high resolution and fine grain, resulting in detailed and sharp images. They are available in different sensitivities, from ISO 50 to ISO 400, allowing adaptation to different lighting conditions.

Areas of application

Due to their special properties, superpanchromatic black and white films are suitable for a wide range of applications:

Landscape photography: The natural tonal distribution and detailed reproduction of structures make superpanchromatic films a popular choice for landscape photography.

Portrait Photography: The ability to differentiate skin tones makes super panchromatic films a good option for portraits.

Architectural photography: The high resolution and fine grain enable detailed images of buildings and structures.

Documentary photography: The natural rendering of scenes and the ability to work in difficult lighting conditions make superpanchromatic films a versatile tool for documentary photographers.

Scientific photography: In fields such as microscopy or astrophotography, superpanchromatic films are valued for their broad spectral sensitivity and high resolution.

Artistic aspects

In addition to their technical advantages, superpanchromatic black and white films also offer a number of artistic possibilities. The increased sensitivity to red light can lead to a special aesthetic, for example by making skin tones appear softer or reproducing certain colors in shades of gray in a more differentiated manner.

Choosing a super panchromatic film can also be a conscious artistic decision to create a certain look or mood in the images.
