The Lomography Redscale XR 50-200 35mm is a redscale film. This is an inverted color negative film that is exposed through the back.
It normally has a sensitivity of ISO 400, but turning it upside down lowers the sensitivity, so it needs to be exposed a bit more. Lomography recommends an ISO of 50 to 200.
Depending on the ISO set on the camera, you get different results. At ISO 200 you get more orange to red tones. At ISO 50 you get more light orange to cool colors and a vintage look. In the back of your mind, the more you overexpose a redscale, the more normal the later photos will be.
The value to which you have exposed the film does not normally have to be specified during development, since the development process is standardized. Any lab that can develop color negative film (C-41 development) can also develop redscale film. However, the prints may look a bit funny, as the labs may apply some kind of filters to them and thus deface the image.
Before developing, it can't hurt to turn the film right side up again to prevent damage to the film during development. Of course, this process must take place in complete darkness. The easiest way to turn the film is to use a second empty 35mm cartridge. In the second cartridge, the beginning of the film is fixed upside down. Now the film can be wound from one cartridge to the other.
The Redscale XR 50-200 is also available as medium format film.
By the way, the XR stands for Extended Range and is supposed to refer to the variable ISO number.
The Redscale XR films were introduced in the summer of 2010.
