Zenit EM

The Zenit EM is a SLR camera. It was built almost a million times by KMZ between 1972 and 1984. It is the successor to the Zenit E. This camera adds an automatic shutter function to the Zenit-E. There are a few other minor cosmetic changes, but just this one major change. The Zenit EM was not only available under the “Zenit” brand, but also under various trademarks in the West.

The camera does not have autofocus. It is focused manually. The lenses of the Zenit EM can be interchanged. For this purpose it has the M42 thread. Mostly the camera comes it with the Helios-44M 2/58.

The M42 thread is a standardized, manufacturer-independent lens mount for interchangeable lenses. The M42 thread was developed as a successor to the M39 thread. M42 lenses were produced by Pentax, Pentacon, Zeiss and KMZ (Zenit), among others.

The camera comes with a light meter. The SLR determines the exposure by metering through the lens (TTL). The aperture and exposure time can be freely set by the photographer. The camera comes with a Bulb setting option. Here, the shutter is open for a variable time.

The use of an external flash unit is possible via the PC flash socket. The Zenit EM can be mounted on a tripod. There is also a thread for a cable release. In addition, there is a self-timer. The 35mm camera does not require batteries.

Films for the Zenit EM

35mm films are exposed in the Zenit EM. 35mm films are still offered by various manufacturers. One option for color images is the Kodak Ultramax 400* and the AgfaPhoto APX 400* for black and white photos. Both films provide solid results with the SLR camera.

The color film is developed using the C-41 process. This development process is performed by all photo labs that offer development of 35mm film. The black and white film goes into a suitable B/W developer.

The area of the negatives are 24 mm x 36 mm. With the size of the exposure area, 36 photos usually fit on a normal film (135-36). The film in the camera must be rewound manually by the photographer.
