Nikon 35Ti

The Nikon 35Ti is a compact camera from Nikon. It was introduced to the public in 1993 by the Japanese manufacturer. Unlike many compact cameras of that time, this model was aimed at professional photographers and experienced users. It is one of the premium compact cameras.

The 35mm photo camera comes with a fixed lens. The lens is called “Nikkor 35mm 1:2.8”. It is constructed from 6 lens elements. The lens elements are sorted in 4 groups. The focal length is 35mm and the maximum aperture is f/2.8. The camera has an infrared autofocus. The minimum distance to the subject is 40 cm.

The Nikon 35Ti has a light meter with 3D matrix metering. It is designed for an ISO range from 25 to 5000. The film speed is read from the 35 mm camera by the DX code on the film cartridge. If there is no DX code on the cartridge, the camera automatically sets the ISO to 100.

The exposure settings are automatically controlled and adjusted by the camera. There is a program automatic and an aperture priority mode. The aperture number can be freely selected in the latter mode. The exposure time, however, is selected automatically. An exposure correction of +-2 f-stops is available.

The camera has a bulb mode. In this mode you can make long time exposures for up to 10 minutes. In low light conditions, the built-in flash can be used. According to the manual, the power of the flash is up to 9 meters.

The Nikon 35Ti has a self-timer and a tripod thread. There is also a panorama mode. In this mode the image is cropped at the top and bottom to create the impression of a panorama. The image area on the negative is then 13 x 36mm. But this is only a cropping, more image content is not captured on the film. Thus, the process can also be easily done in the post processing, specially if the negatives are digitalized. Thus, both options are left open.

The housing of the camera is made of high-quality titanium. It weighs 310 grams in total. The dimensions are 11.8 x 6.6 x 3.6 cm. A very striking feature of the compact camera is the analogue display on the top of the camera. Clock hands indicate aperture, distance, exposure correction and number of images.

The 35 mm camera is powered by a CR 123A battery (eBay / Amazon*). These batteries are still easy to buy today. One charge should be enough for 18 rolls of film. For this calculation 324 pictures of the 648 were taken with flash. The films are transported automatically and also the rewind into the cartridge is automated.

The Nikon 35Ti Quartz Date (QD) is a variant of the camera. This variation allows the exposure time and date to be imprinted in the photo.

Films for the Nikon 35Ti

Without photo films nothing works with the Nikon 35Ti. More precisely, the camera needs 35mm film according to the manual. Films of this format are still easily available today. A recommendation for colour photos is the Kodak Portra 400*. If you want to stay monochrome, the Kodak T-Max 100* is not bad.

The colour film is processed in the C-41 development process. This is offered by almost every photo lab. The development of a 35mm colour film is possible at most drugstore chains in Germany, for example.

The black and white film, on the other hand, must be processed in a black and white developer. There is a variety of products with different parameters. The best is to develop the film yourself. During the development at home one has full control and in the long run this is also cheaper.

Value of the camera

The Nikon 35Ti is a premium camera. This positioning is also clearly reflected in the price for one copy. The new price of the camera was already quite high and even today you have to pay a handsome price for a used camera.

The value of a specimen varies depending on the condition and scope of delivery. In most cases, one pays something in the range of 500 to 900 euros for a 35Ti. It is also not foreseeable that the prices will strongly decrease, as the offer of working cameras will logically decrease more and more.
