VEB Zeiss Ikon Dresden produced the SLR camera Contax FBM between 1958 and 1962. A synonym for this model is the Pentacon FBM, a name primarily used for export products, while the Contax name was established in the GDR.
Camera Functionalities
Lens Selection
One of the striking features of the Contax FBM is its extensive compatibility with various lenses, enabled by an M42 lens mount. This opens up a wide field of creative possibilities for photographers through the use of different lenses.
The standard lens commonly used is the “Carl Zeiss Tessar” with an aperture of 1:2.8 and a focal length of 50mm. The aperture range, from 2.8 to 16, allows photographers to experiment with different depths of field and handle various lighting situations.
Shutter Mechanism and Exposure Times
The Contax FBM is equipped with a reliable and precise horizontally running cloth-focal plane shutter. It offers a wide range of exposure times from Bulb to 1/1000 second, allowing photographers to effectively capture diverse subjects and scenarios.
Focus and Flash Functionality
The camera’s manual focusing allows users to make deliberate decisions regarding image composition. In terms of flash options, it features a sync socket (X-contact) on its surface, although an accessory shoe is missing.
Light Meter and Viewfinder
With an uncoupled selenium light meter, secured by a protective cover, the Contax FBM assists photographers in achieving perfect exposure settings. The prism viewfinder, equipped with a field lens and a split-image rangefinder, enables sharp and accurate viewing of the target subject.
Film Handling and Additional Features
Film transport is achieved via a knurled screw, with the shutter release strategically placed at the front in an angled position, complemented by a wire release thread. Furthermore, the camera is equipped with useful extras, including a self-timer, a film type reminder disc under the rewind knob, and a film counter located below the knurled screw for film transport and tensioning.
Film Material for the Contax FBM
The Contax FBM is optimally designed for the 35mm film format. Fortunately, there are still a variety of film options available for color and black-and-white photography in this format.
For colorful images, the Kodak Ultramax 400 is an excellent choice, while the Ilford FP4 Plus is ideal for black-and-white shots. Both films stand for consistently high quality and reliable results.
In terms of processing, the color film is designed for the C-41 process, which is offered by numerous specialized photo labs. Many drugstores also offer this service for color films. Monochrome films, on the other hand, offer various processing options that can be realized both in professional photo labs and at home with the right equipment.
