Some time ago, we published a review of the Wurkkos HD02. Now there is a Pro version that comes with some new features. Is the Wurkkos HD02 PRO worth buying, and is an upgrade worthwhile?
Technical Specifications
The construction of the Wurkkos HD02 PRO is based on a solid housing made of anodized aircraft aluminum. The device meets IPX6 protection against strong water jets and withstands drops from a height of up to one meter.
With a length of approximately 126 millimeters, a width of 41 millimeters, and a depth of 26 millimeters, the lamp weighs just under 195 grams without an inserted battery cell. The shape differs noticeably from classic round-tube lamps, as the flat profile must accommodate a variety of controls and mechanical components.
At the center of the main lighting is a focused LED spotlight that achieves a maximum brightness of 3200 lumens. Wurkkos specifies the maximum beam distance as 330 meters with a light intensity of approximately 21,700 candela. For brightness adjustment, stepped modes and stepless dimming from a lower limit of 10 lumens are available.
An internal temperature protection automatically reduces the output in the high-performance range to prevent overheating of the internal electronics and the emitters.
A key special feature is the two fold-out side lights. These area lights together produce a luminous flux of up to 600 lumens, which corresponds to 300 lumens per side. The color temperature of the side panels can be continuously adjusted in a spectrum from warm 3000 Kelvin to cool 6000 Kelvin. Mechanically, the wings are designed to tilt vertically up to 135 degrees and rotate horizontally up to 180 degrees.
Additionally, the housing integrates a red LED with a wavelength of 660 nanometers. This can be continuously adjusted from half a lumen to a maximum of 110 lumens. There is also a UV diode with a wavelength of 365 nanometers, which can be operated in two power levels at 130 milliwatts and 520 milliwatts. The fifth mode consists of a green targeting beam with a wavelength of 520 nanometers.
Power is supplied via a replaceable 21700 lithium-ion battery with a nominal capacity of 5,000 milliampere-hours. The battery is removed via a rear screw cap or charged directly via a protected USB-C port.
In the lowest brightness mode, the entire system achieves an operating time of up to 140 hours. For attachment, the HD02 PRO offers a magnetic end cap, a removable clip, a loop for a hand strap, and a standardized thread for tripods with a quarter-inch diameter.
In Practice
In daily use, the Wurkkos HD02 PRO shows clear benefits for multifaceted tasks. The operating concept combines a rotary switch with a centrally placed button. The rotary ring preselects the desired operating mode, while the push button handles switching on and off as well as dimming. This separation prevents accidental operation in everyday work but requires a short adjustment period for one-handed use.
An integrated LED in the button indicates the battery charge level using different colors. Here, I would have wished for a small display, like on the Wurkkos TD11, for the charge level and remaining runtime. For a Pro model, this would be desirable.
The front spotlight is well suited for illuminating outdoor areas. The light beam has a clear focus in the center with sufficient spill light at the edges. At maximum output, a wide path or a large area is reliably illuminated. But even a pitch-dark interior is completely illuminated at full strength.
The special feature of the flashlight is, of course, the side wings. The two side wings open independently of each other and, thanks to built-in Hall sensors, automatically switch on when unfolded if desired. The two-axis mobility allows the light to be precisely aimed at the work area. Attach the lamp via the magnetic base or the tripod thread. It also stands on its own.
The adjustable color temperature proves useful, as warm light is gentler on the eyes during longer work sessions, while cold light emphasizes finer contrasts.
The red light can be activated without going through glaring white light levels, preserving the eyes' dark adaptation. At a low level, it is suitable for reading maps; at higher output, it illuminates paths away from disturbing headlights.
The UV source with 365 nanometers excites fluorescent substances well. It quickly makes security features on documents, contaminants, or leaks in air conditioning systems visible.
The green laser beam primarily serves as a pointing device at a distance, to point out specific details during meetings or tours. Always observe safety distances to avoid glare.
Critically, the mechanical play of the movable side wings should be noted. Due to the double hinge guide, the hinges have a certain give, which can be a weak point in the event of rough impacts or falls. The thread of the battery cap also requires some patience when screwing it together, as the sealing ring sits quite tightly.
Comparison Wurkkos HD02 PRO vs. HD02
Another difference concerns the light modes. The HD02 PRO now has a dedicated red light that the base model lacked. In return, the integrated power bank function for reverse charging external devices has been omitted. The switching logic and the feel of the rotary ring have been noticeably refined in the PRO version, so the individual detents are more clearly defined.
In terms of light output, both variants are at a similar level. Both use 21700 cells as standard and deliver comparable range for the front light.
Conclusion
The Wurkkos HD02 PRO proves that a multifunctional concept can work in practice. It combines tasks in a compact form for which one would otherwise need to carry several specialized lamps. The floodlight, the side wings, and UV light are the strongest arguments for this model. Add to that a solid housing, the ability to change the battery, either for long trips or if it gets weak, and the versatile attachment options.
Negative, for some, might be the weight. However, one must of course put the range of functions and performance in relation. The Wurkkos HD03 is smaller, for example, but naturally offers much less.
Is the upgrade from the HD02 to the HD02 Pro worth it? If you often need the red light or more flexibility with the side wings, the answer is yes. Otherwise, you can actually stick with the HD02.
