Dimensions & Materials
The backpack's main body is engineered for demanding use, crafted from a rugged outer fabric with a water-repellent coating. With a 30-liter capacity in the main compartment and an optional 10-liter front expansion, the bag offers generous storage space for professional camera gear. However, this capacity is directly reflected in its outer dimensions.
Measuring 540 × 360 × 250 mm externally (or 590 × 360 × 250 mm including the attached wheels), the bag is quite bulky. In particular, the 25 cm depth significantly exceeds the standard carry-on baggage limits of most airlines, which generally mandate a 20 cm maximum. Because this depth increases even further when the bag is expanded and fully packed, frequent flyers should carefully check whether the roller might be flagged at the gate and forced to be checked as standard luggage.
The branding is very understated. A small logo tag on the front is quite tasteful. The model name logo on the side, however, feels somewhat unnecessary in my opinion. While discreet, it looks slightly less professional.
Inside, the bag features a dark lining. A lighter-colored interior would have been a distinct advantage here. Dark items—such as lens caps, memory card cases, or black adapter cables—are difficult to spot against a dark background in low light. A light fabric would increase contrast and make finding small accessories much easier in dim environments, although it does have the downside of showing dirt and stains more quickly.
The overall build quality of the outer shell, stitching, and attachment points is solid and promises a good lifespan. The zippers on the essential compartments also glide smoothly, and the main compartment offers the option to attach a padlock for added security.
Layout & Compartments
The main compartment unzips across the entire front panel, offering direct, full access to your gear. The included dividers allow for a customized layout for camera bodies, prime lenses, zoom lenses, and accessories.
The 30-litre main compartment offers plenty of storage space and can easily accommodate even the most demanding professional kit. For example, it can safely accommodate two to three full-frame mirrorless cameras (such as a Sony Alpha 7 IV or Canon EOS R5) complete with a 70–200mm f/2.8 telephoto zoom lens attached, a 24–70mm f/2.8 standard zoom lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens and two additional prime lenses.
The compartment is also ideal for event and portrait photographers: it easily accommodates several hot-shoe flashes or compact battery-powered flashes, complete with radio triggers and light-shaping adaptors.
Alternatively, alongside two camera bodies and lenses, there is still enough space for a compact drone setup (such as a DJI Mavic or Mini), including a controller and spare batteries, or for radio links and audio accessories.
A customer-friendly aspect of this system is that individual partition dividers can be purchased separately as spare parts. This makes it very easy to tailor the bag precisely to your specific kit.
An interesting potential upgrade would be a completely removable camera insert. If the entire photo unit could be taken out in one piece, the bag could effortlessly double as a standard rolling suitcase for clothes and travel gear on personal trips.
On the opposite side, there is a dedicated compartment for laptops and tablets. It is subdivided so you can store a laptop and a tablet separately.
On the front of the bag, there is a quick-access pocket. It is surprisingly deep and offers ample space for cables, a power bank, or a notebook. It also features a key leash for securing a key ring, small flashlight, or multitool.
In addition to the main compartment, the backpack features an expandable front section that provides an extra 10 liters of volume when needed. In daily use, this expansion proves to be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the permanent partition between the main compartment and the expansion area makes logical sense: when the main compartment is packed with cameras and heavy lenses, you generally don't want to place clothes or personal items directly on top of delicate electronics.
On the other hand, this fixed divider limits versatility. If you need to pack a larger item like a gimbal or a bulky video light, having the option to remove the divider would be very helpful in order to utilize the combined depth of both compartments seamlessly.
Inside the expandable front compartment, there is a zippered pocket in the upper section and a smaller pocket at the bottom on the opposite side. Additionally, there is a dedicated slot for an Apple AirTag.
On the side of the PGYTECH Roller, there are two pockets with elastic bands suitable for stowing a tripod, umbrella, or water bottle. In my view, these pockets could be a touch larger.
However, a larger tripod can also be strapped to the top of the bag. Two dedicated straps are included, which attach to four loops and hold the tripod securely in place.
For smaller accessories, the backpack comes with a separate accessory pouch (Digital Organizer Bag) specifically designed for cables, chargers, and camera batteries.
A well-thought-out detail is the included carry strap with a Quick Connector / Quick Bead system. This allows the pouch to be securely fastened either inside the backpack or to the side pockets, detached in seconds, and used as a standalone small shoulder bag—a real benefit at airport security checkpoints when batteries and power banks need to be screened separately. The carry strap can also be repurposed for other uses.
Inside the organizer pouch, tailored slots provide structured organization for multiple batteries and various accessories. One side features elastic bands for batteries and cables, along with battery charge status indicators at three positions.
The other side houses a zippered, partitioned mesh pocket. For better visibility, it would have been preferable if this pocket were made from transparent material. Clear vinyl or transparent windows would allow you to see memory cards or adapter cables at a glance without having to unzip and dig through each pocket.
Features
The bag's greatest strength is its seamless transformation between a rolling suitcase and a backpack. Smooth, dual-row PU wheels are mounted at the base and can be removed quickly when needed. The wheels glide effortlessly with virtually no rolling resistance on smooth surfaces. In fact, they roll almost too easily, so you have to be cautious on inclines if you let go of the handle for a moment.
The three-stage aluminum handle extends generously and provides stable, wobble-free towing. This stability is partly due to the handle spanning the full width of the bag rather than being a narrow central bar.
When the ground gets uneven, the integrated shoulder straps come into play. These are stowed behind a rear back panel and can be deployed in just a few quick steps. A sternum strap is also included.
If you plan to wear the backpack for an extended period, the wheels can be detached and stowed in an included storage bag. For quick transitions, there are two built-in wheel covers that pull over the wheels to protect your clothes from dirt. However, if the wheels are heavily soiled with mud or rain, I would recommend quickly popping off the two wheels and packing them away separately. Thanks to their quick-release design, they can be cleaned easily at home later, whereas washing the fabric wheel covers is a bit more tedious.
In everyday use, alongside its many strengths, a few minor details leave room for improvement:
One recurring issue involves the zipper for the retractable handle compartment. This zipper frequently snags on the adjacent strap loops located on top. Every time you open or close the compartment, you have to manually push the loops aside with your fingers to prevent jamming.
Another detail concerns the top and side grab handles. The clearance between the handle and the bag's body is relatively narrow. On colder days when wearing thick gloves, there is little room to slide your hand in and get a quick, secure grip. A handle with slightly more clearance would make outdoor handling much easier.
The padding protects your equipment well against bumps and impacts. Even in bad weather, the interior stays dry—provided you slip on the included rain cover during heavy downpours. The rain cover features cutouts for the trolley handle and wheels, so both can still be utilized in the rain.
Conclusion
The hybrid concept works brilliantly in practice: the lightning-fast, hassle-free switch between a rolling case and a full-fledged backpack is incredibly practical for day-to-day work. On paved streets or in train stations, you can effortlessly roll your heavy gear to save your energy—and the moment stairs, cobblestones, or rough forest trails block your way, the bag can be shifted comfortably onto your back in seconds.
While our test did uncover a few minor flaws—such as the occasionally snagging handle zipper, the dark interior lining, and the opaque mesh compartments in the accessory pouch—the substantial 25 cm depth also noticeably limits its viability as standard airline carry-on luggage.
Airline travel aside, however, this model is an outstanding choice for road trips, train travel, and any production where you need to move a large amount of kit.
