The Nolan 500T/5219 is a color negative film. It was sold under the Nolan brand, based on Christopher Nolan, by a supplier from China. The film is no longer available for purchase.

The film cartridge contains material that was manufactured by Kodak for cinema film production. The Nolan film was made from large spools of Kodak VISION3 500T.

Properties of the Kodak VISION3 500T

The Kodak VISION3 500T is a film that has been specially optimized for artificial light (tungsten). Unlike digital cameras, where the white balance can be flexibly adjusted, analog cameras require film material that is tailored to the respective lighting situation. This allows color-correct images to be produced under artificial light.

Of course, the Nolan 500T/5219 can also be used in daylight, but without additional adjustments, color shifts will occur. A suitable filter can solve this problem, but at the same time reduces the film's sensitivity to light.

Developing the Nolan 500T/5219

To achieve the best results, the Nolan 500T/5219 must be developed using the ECN-2 process. This is necessary because the film is equipped with a special protective layer that protects it from abrasion in cinema cameras. This so-called Remjet layer is removed during development.

If the film is developed using the C-41 process instead, residues of the coating can affect the chemicals in the laboratory. Some specialized photo labs offer ECN-2 development. It is therefore advisable to clarify in advance whether your preferred lab offers this service. Alternatively, there are variants of the VISION3 500T without a Remjet layer that are easier to handle.

Compatibility and cameras

The Nolan 500T/5219 is designed for 35mm cameras and fits all models that support the 35mm format. Recommended camera manufacturers include Minolta, Olympus, Nikon and also premium brands such as Leica and Konica.

It is particularly helpful if the camera has the option of setting the film sensitivity manually or working in manual mode. This allows the film to be optimally adapted to the respective lighting conditions.

If the Nolan 500T/5219 is not available, there are other suppliers who prepare the Kodak VISION3 500T in a similar way for photographers.
