LOMO, an abbreviation for Leningradskoye Optiko Mechanicheskoye Obyedinenie (Ленинградское оптико-механическое объединение), is a name that is deeply rooted in the world of photography and optics. The roots of this Russian company go back to 1914, when it was founded in Saint Petersburg, then still Petrograd.

In its early years, LOMO focused on developing optical devices for military purposes. It was not until 1930 that the company began producing cameras, which soon became an important part of its portfolio.

Arguably the most iconic camera LOMO has produced is the legendary LC-A (Lomo Kompakt Automat). This unconventional camera, with its distinctive design and ability to produce unique, often surprising images, became the heart of the Lomography movement. A sort of counter-movement to traditional photography, Lomography celebrated spontaneity, experimentation and the joy of imperfection. The LC-A, with its ease of use and characteristic "flaws" such as vignetting and color saturation, became a symbol of this movement, inspiring photographers around the world to see the world with new eyes.

In addition to the LC-A, LOMO also spawned other notable camera series, including the Smena and the Lubitel. These cameras, often robust and easy to use, found their way into the hands of amateur photographers and professionals alike. They were valued for their ability to capture authentic and candid moments and helped to make photography accessible to a wider audience.

In addition to still cameras, LOMO also produced film cameras that were used in the film industry and by documentary filmmakers. However, the company did not specialize only in cameras. A large part of its business was focused on the manufacture of other optical devices, including microscopes, telescopes and binoculars. These products found applications in science, research, education and leisure, and helped to cement LOMO's reputation as a leading manufacturer of precision optical instruments.

Today's Lomo cameras offered by Lomography can be found here.
