The LomoApparat Schiele Edition is a camera from Lomography. It was introduced in early July 2024. A variant of the Lomo'Instant Automat was also introduced. The online shop has the camera on offer for 109 euros.
The camera's functions are similar to other LomoApparat models. The design is decorated with two works of art by Egon Schiele.
Camera Features
The LomoApparat Schiele Edition is a unique film camera that stands out for its distinctive design and special features. It is equipped with a fixed 21mm wide-angle lens that offers a maximum aperture of f/10. This combination enables shots with a wide field of view characterized by strong contrasts and characteristic vignetting, creating a distinctive retro look.
The camera does not have an autofocus function as the distance setting is fixed. To ensure sharp images, a minimum distance of 50 cm from the subject should be maintained. This promotes conscious image composition and encourages photographers to select and position their subjects carefully.
The LomoApparat Schiele Edition does not have a light meter, so the exposure must be set manually. The aperture is fixed, while the exposure time can be selected between 1/100 second (N) for bright conditions and Bulb (B) for long exposures. In Bulb mode, the shutter remains open as long as the shutter button is held down, allowing creative experiments with light.
A built-in flash with a range of 0.5 to 2 meters (at ISO 100) supports shots in difficult lighting conditions or can be used for targeted effects. The flash can be deactivated if required and has a frame for colour filters to individually colour the light and thus set artistic accents.
The camera is equipped with a tripod thread, which is particularly recommended in bulb mode to avoid camera shake. In addition, a wrist strap can be attached to hold the camera securely in your hand while ensuring easy access.
The power supply is provided by a standard AA battery (eBay / Amazon*), which is only required to operate the flash. This means that the camera can also function without batteries, which increases its versatility and reliability.
Films for the LomoApparat camera
The LomoApparat Schiele Edition is designed for the use of 35 mm films. There is a wide range of color and black and white films available that are compatible with this camera, including popular options such as the Kodak Gold 200* for vibrant color images and the Ilford Delta 400* for classic black and white shots with fine grain.
Color films are developed using the C-41 process, which is available from most photo labs and drugstores. Black and white films can be developed either in a photo lab or at home, with detailed instructions available online to help both novice and experienced photographers develop their own film.
The LomoApparat Schiele Edition negatives measure 24mm x 36mm, which is the standard format for 35mm film. Since the camera does not have an automatic film advance, the film must be manually wound after each shot by operating the thumbwheel on the back of the camera. This manual process adds to the analogue charm of the camera and encourages a conscious engagement with the photographic process.
Egon Schiele
Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was an Austrian painter and draftsman who is one of the most important representatives of Expressionism. Born in Tulln on the Danube, he began his artistic training at a young age. His works are characterized by an intensive examination of the human body and psyche. His often erotic depictions, which challenged social norms, led to controversy and even a brief imprisonment.
Schiele developed a unique style characterized by angular lines, distorted perspectives and expressive coloring. His paintings and drawings often show nude figures in intimate or vulnerable poses that express both beauty and pain.
