The Splash AF 2 is a compact camera for the 35mm format from Chinon. It is the successor to the Chinon Splash AF.

The design of the Chinon Splash AF 2 is quite distinctive. Rubber grommets are fitted around the lens and film door, giving the camera a robust appearance.

At first glance, you could mistake it for an underwater camera. However, it should be emphasized that it is only splashproof, not fully waterproof. That makes them suitable for light rain or the occasional burst of water, but not for underwater shooting.

Inside the Chinon Splash AF 2 is a 35mm lens with three elements arranged in three groups. It has a maximum aperture of f/3.9. Auto focus is used to focus. The close-up limit is 130 cm.

The camera has a programmed electronic shutter and has a speed range between 1/90 and 1/410 second. Such specifications suggest that she is particularly comfortable in sunshine or in bright environments.

The integrated flash with a guide number of 10 may sound simple, but it is convincing, especially for macro shots. It ranges from 1.3 to 3.5 meters.

For exposure metering, the camera is optimized for DX-coded films and covers an ISO range from 100 to 1000. ISO 100 is set as standard for non-coded films.

The Splash AF 2 is powered by two standard AA batteries (eBay / Amazon*), which makes it particularly practical for on the go. These batteries are essential for functions such as flash and automatic film advance.

Film selection for the Chinon Splash AF 2

The Chinon Splash AF 2 uses 35mm film. Such films are still readily available and developable. We recommend films with an ISO value between 100 and 1000, preferably with DX coding.

Suitable films for this camera are, for example, the Kodak Ultramax 400* for color photos and the Ilford XP2 Super* for monochrome photos. Both films are ideal for everyday use and have performed well in tests.

Model variants

There are several versions of the original Splash AF model. For example, there's the Splash AF 2, which is basically the same as the original camera but with a black body and clear shutter guard. Another version, the Chinon Splash GX, keeps the original design but uses a fixed focus system instead of autofocus.

The camera was also marketed under a different name, namely the Revue AW600 by Foto-Quelle.
