The Olympus-35 ECR is a Japanese 35mm film camera from the 1970s.

Unlike some other cameras, the lens on this 35mm camera, an E. Zuiko with a 42mm focal length (consisting of 5 elements in 4 groups), cannot be removed. The widest aperture is f/2.8. The camera features a fully automatic program auto mode, which automatically selects the correct aperture and shutter speed combination using an electronic Seiko ESF shutter. The working range extends from 4 seconds to 1/800th of a second.

There is no autofocus on this 35mm camera. You have to focus manually on the subject using the rotating helicoid focus ring. With the help of the split-image rangefinder, you can precisely determine the distance to the subject. For sharp photos, a minimum distance of 90 cm to the subject should be maintained.

A sensitive cadmium sulfide (CdS) exposure meter is integrated into the Olympus-35 ECR for determining exposure settings. The exposure meter allows the use of films with a sensitivity of ASA 25 to 800. A yellow warning light in the viewfinder alerts you to slow shutter speeds (1/30s to 4s). Exposure compensation can be made by adjusting the ASA setting.

In addition to a PC flash connection, the camera is also compatible with hot-shoe flashes. The automatic flash system adjusts the aperture according to the focus setting. The flash synchronization speed is 1/20th of a second.

A thread on the bottom of the 35mm camera allows a tripod to be attached. Additionally, the lens features a 43.5mm screw thread for filters and other accessories.

With dimensions of 11.1 x 6.7 x 5.2 cm, the Olympus-35 ECR weighs 415 grams. According to the manual, the power supply is provided by 2x 1.4V Mallory RM-640 mercury batteries rm640 or equivalents. Without functioning batteries, the shutter cannot be triggered.

Films for the Olympus-35 ECR

35mm film is used in the Olympus-35 ECR. Despite technological advancements, 35mm films are still produced and can be easily developed at most external photo labs.

One option for color images is the Kodak Ultramax 400* and the Ilford FP4 Plus* for black and white photos. A good number of other manufacturers also produce films for this format.

For color films, the C-41 development process is a common procedure. The C-41 process is standardized and offered by most development labs.

The exposure area of the Olympus-35 ECR measures 24 mm x 36 mm. A standard 35mm film holds around 36 photos. The camera features an “EL system” for easy film loading and a lock to prevent double exposures.

Since the camera does not have an automatic motor, you have to manually advance to the next frame using the thumbwheel. The frame counter automatically resets after opening the back cover.
