Compard R09 One Shot, also simply known as R09, has become very popular among black and white film photographers. It is not only appreciated for the fine image details it produces, but is also regarded as the spiritual successor of the legendary Rodinal. A Brief History

When AgfaPhoto filed for bankruptcy in 2005, many photographers feared the worst for their favorite film developer, Rodinal. However, the original formula for Rodinal was quickly acquired and revived by various companies under different brand names. One of these companies is Compard, which began manufacturing R09 One Shot as a reincarnation of the classic Rodinal formula.

Understanding Compard R09 One Shot

Like Rodinal, Compard R09 One Shot is a highly concentrated film developer and essentially follows the same formulation. Because of its concentration, it offers a long shelf life and is designed for one-time use. This makes R09 an economical choice for photographers who may not develop films frequently but still need a reliable developer when they do.

Features and Use of Compard R09 One Shot

Similar to Rodinal, Compard R09 One Shot is known for its ability to produce images with high acutance and sharpness due to the edge effect. Additionally, it often results in more pronounced grain, making it an excellent choice for photographers who appreciate a grainier, vintage-like aesthetic in their images.

In terms of usage, R09 is operated as a one-time developer, and a fresh mix is used each time a film is developed. The dilution ratios typically range between 1:25 and 1:100, depending on the desired outcome. Lower dilution ratios like 1:25 produce images with more grain and higher contrast, while higher dilutions like 1:100 will produce less grain and softer contrast.

Like its predecessor, Compard R09 is highly alkaline but non-toxic. However, safety precautions should be observed when handling it, including wearing appropriate protective equipment, avoiding direct skin or eye contact, and ensuring proper ventilation in the workspace.
