What should you consider with the Smena SL and the SL cartridges?

Can I still use a Smena SL? What should I consider with the cartridges and can I reuse them?

I would have rather recommended a Smena 35 or Smena 8M.
With these two Russian cameras, you don't have the problem with the film format.

If you still want to take photos with the Smena SL, you have no choice but to buy at least one film.

The function of the SL cartridge is similar to that of medium format film. The camera winds the film from one side to the other, so it always needs an empty cartridge. In total, there are two cartridges in the camera. The cartridges are no longer produced, so it can be a bit difficult to find them.

The advantage is that it is normal 35mm film, only the cartridges are different. You can also refill the SL cartridges, which is quite easy. If I remember correctly, a cartridge holds film for about 12-15 pictures.

The filling must of course be done in complete darkness. You don't need a darkroom for this, a changing bag will do, and in a pinch, it also works under the covers. When you are done taking photos, it is better, in my opinion, to develop the film yourself. If you drop off your film at a drugstore, for example, you don't get the cartridge back, which you need again.

In my opinion, it is quite a lot of effort. I would advise you to put the Smena SL on the shelf and instead of spending money on a cartridge, add a little more and get a Smena for 35mm film (in standard cartridges).

The cost of a 35mm Smena is in the range of fifteen to thirty euros. With a bit of luck, you might get one even cheaper.
