The Polaroid Autofocus 660 is an instant camera for the 600 format. It was introduced by Polaroid in 1981 and is the first 600 camera with autofocus.

The design of the Polaroid Autofocus 660 is similar to the other Polaroid 600 models. The body of the plastic camera is black, except for some small details.

Opening the camera reveals the lens and the other controls. What is immediately noticeable, compared to the other Polaroid 600 cameras, is the gridded golden disk next to the lens.

This membrane is necessary for one of the main features of the camera, the autofocus. The Polaroid Sonar AF system works a little differently than modern cameras, the camera sends out sound waves that reflect off the subject and come back. This is how the camera determines the distance and adjusts it accordingly. The closest focusing distance is 120 cm.

An advantage is that this autofocus technique does not require light and can therefore be used in low or no light. The autofocus can be switched off by a button under the flash.

Otherwise, the Polaroid Autofocus 660 is quite similar to the Polaroid One Step Flash.

As a photographer, you can’t adjust much, only with the light/dark slider you can change the later image a bit. The camera does the rest for you. The viewfinder is not connected to the lens and is kept quite simple.

When the flash is ready, the small light on the back changes from red to green. Power for the flash and camera comes from a 6-volt battery in the film pack. If you want to take a picture guaranteed without flash, you have to press the rear button on the shutter release.

Polaroid no longer makes the appropriate films for the Polaroid Autofocus 660. However, the company “The Impossible Project”, which took over an old Polaroid factory, offers instant films for the format again. They have also been sold under the original brand again since 2020.

You can use in the Polaroid Autofocus 660, for example, the Polaroid Color Film for 600* for color pictures or the Polaroid B&W Film for 600* for black and white.

When taking pictures with the Impossible films, you should remember that there are only eight shots in a pack, which means that when you see a “2” in the frame counter, it’s already the end and not just at “0”.
