The Nikon L35AF is a 35mm camera. It belongs to the group of point and shoot cameras. The model was introduced in 1983 and was the first compact camera of the Japanese manufacturer. It is part of the L series. In 1985 the Nikon L35AF2 followed.

The camera was able to inspire many photographers, even today, due to its robust construction and the good specifications for a compact camera. In Japan the model was affectionately nicknamed “Pikaichi”.

The lens of the camera cannot be changed. The name of the lens, which was developed by Koichi Wakamiya, is “Nikon Lens 35mm 1:2.8”. It consists of five elements in four groups. The focal length is 35mm. The largest aperture is f/2.8. Manual focusing is not necessary with the 35mm camera. The Nikon L35AF comes with an autofocus. The minimum distance to the subject is 80 cm. A filter with 46 mm thread can be used.

The 35mm camera has a built-in light meter. It is designed for an ISO range from 50 to 1000. The exposure is set automatically by the camera. There is no direct influence on shutter speed and aperture. There is a backlight correction (+2 EV).

In low light conditions the built-in flash can be used. 10 meters is the indicated range at a sensitivity of ISO 100. The camera has a built-in self-timer and a thread for a tripod. The self-timer has a 10 second delay.

At a size of 12.4 x 7.3 x 4.5 cm, the Nikon L35AF weighs 345 grams. The power source of the Nikon L35AF are two AA batteries (eBay / Amazon*). The batteries are designed to last for 100 rolls of 24 frames of film without flash or 10 rolls with flash for each shot under normal use. If the batteries are empty or not inserted, the camera will not be able to take pictures.

Films for the Nikon L35AF

The Nikon L35AF takes pictures on 35mm film. 35mm films are still produced today and are quite easy to get. For color shots there is the Kodak Portra 400*. One way to get black-and-white images is the Kodak T-Max 400*.

The development process for the colour film is the C-41 process. This development process is offered by most laboratories. The black and white film must be processed in a proper black and white developer. The development is possible in the laboratory or at home.

The negatives of the 35mm photo camera have a size of 24 mm x 36 mm. The film in the 35mm camera is automatically forwarded to the next frame.

The Nikon L35AF is no longer in production. The prices for the camera vary depending on its state of preservation. The camera is still in great demand among photographers and collectors. For one copy of this model you can already put up to 300 Euros on the table.

Nikon L35AD

The Nikon L35AFAD / L35AD is a variation of the compact camera. This model is identical in the range of functions. However, it offers the possibility to imprint the date of recording in the image. AD stands for Auto Date. Later the abbreviation QD was more common.
