The Lomokino is a 35mm camera from Lomography. It can capture small images onto a 35mm film in quick succession, these can later be stitched together to make a short movie. It was introduced in November 2011.

There is a crank on the side of the camera. Turning the crank advances the film, and in the process the camera takes pictures. If you turn the crank faster, it takes many pictures in quick succession. If you turn it slower, it will take fewer pictures. The frame rate is approximately three to five frames per second, depending on the speed of rotation.

The Lomokino exposes an area of 24mm x 8.5mm per image. This means that 144 small images fit onto a standard 36-frame film. This later becomes a clip with a length of about 30 seconds.

The aperture can be adjusted on an edge on the front. This goes continuously from f/5.6 to f/11. The exposure time cannot be changed.

The focus of the Lomokino is actually fixed. However, by holding down a button on the front, the close focus limit can be changed to 60 cm.

The Lomokino also has a fold-out viewfinder. Looking through the viewfinder while filming is a bit uncomfortable, though. For shake-free filming, the camera also has a connection (standard 1/4 tripod thread) for a tripod.

The Lomokino has a hot shoe for using a flash. This should have a short cradle recharge time, since it must flash quickly one after the other. If it would take too long for this, some pictures would always be too dark. The only flash from Lomography that can do this is Fritz the blitz, but only at the lowest power.

It can be loaded with any kind of 35mm film (eBay / Amazon*). It doesn’t matter if it’s color negative, slide, black and white or redscale film.

To load the film, the front part of the camera must be removed. To do this, two buttons on the side of the camera must be pressed simultaneously. Then you need to pull some of the film out of the film canister and wrap it over the top spool and then back again. This is important, otherwise the film will be exposed through the wrong side. Then you still have to push out the rewind lever, insert the roll of film and push the lever back in.

Finally, attach the beginning of the film to the transport spool and crank a little until the film is transported and does not come loose again. Then reassemble the camera and crank it a bit. That’s it!

You can see how much is left on the film by looking at a window on the side of the camera. When the film is full, the crank stops turning and a red slider appears on the top of the camera behind the hot shoe.

To rewind, simply turn the rewind lever in the direction the arrow on it points. In the beginning you will feel some resistance. When you no longer feel resistance and you can easily turn, the film is rewound. Then you can open the camera and release the film.

When developing the film, you should tell the lab that they will not cut the film. Then you can either leave it that way later or cut it into strips for scanning. Depending on your operating system, you can then use software to merge the scanned images into one film.

In the normal scope of supply of the camera (without Lomokinoscope) are beside the camera a book about the Lomokino and a manual.

Accessories for the LomoKino

Lomokinoscope

This accessory makes it easy to view the film that has been shot. To do this, you put the developed film in the Lomokinoscope, hold it in front of your eye and turn the crank. It is important that the film has not been cut into strips, but is in one piece for use in this accessory.

Of course, the whole thing works best with slide film developed as slide film (E6 process). If you take a black and white film or color negative film, you just see the negative.

The Lomokinoscope can be purchased either separately or bundled with the Lomokino.

LomoKino Smartphone Holder

This accessory allows you to quickly digitize the film you have shot yourself. To do this, place the developed film in the Lomokinoscope and instead of your eye, use the holder to place your smartphone in front of the opening.

The smartphone is then left to film only what it sees. Especially for iOS devices, there is also an app from Lomography that facilitates the process. Qualitatively, this method cannot be compared with a good scanner. The holder works safely with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy S II and Sony Ray.

Lomokino Handgrip

This accessory is designed to allow for shake-free shooting and better posture when filming with the movie camera. The grip connects at the bottom using the tripod socket. It was introduced in November 2012.
