The Lomo’Instant Square is an instant camera. It was introduced by Lomography in summer 2017. The first models could be purchased via the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. A total of 3,141 supporters contributed to the project. The total sum of the project was 579,583 US dollars.
The camera comes with a fixed lens. 95 mm is the focal length of the lens. The largest aperture of the camera is f/10. The special feature of the camera is that the lens can be folded to make the camera more compact during transport.
The Lomo’Instant Square has no autofocus. Therefore you have to focus by hand. For this purpose there is a lever on the side of the camera with which you can choose between three levels. The minimum distance to the subject is 80 cm.
The lens has a filter thread with a diameter of 30.5 mm. A suitable lens attachment is available from Lomography. On the one hand there is a portrait glass lens with a close-up limit of 50 cm and a splitter. The splitter can be used to cover part of the subject.
The Lomo’Instant Square has a built-in light meter. The Lomo’Instant Square has an automatic exposure control and sets aperture and exposure time automatically. With the exposure compensation the exposure can be changed by one f-stop at a time.
If you want to take long time pictures, there is the bulb setting. In this mode, the film is exposed as long as the shutter release button is pressed. Double and multiple exposures are also possible in unlimited numbers with the LomoInstant.
The Lomo’Instant Square has a built-in flash. At a sensitivity of ISO 100 it reaches up to nine meters. Included are some color filters for the flash. If desired, the flash can be switched off.
The Lomo’Instant Square has a thread for a tripod on the bottom and a self-timer. The self-timer of the instant camera has a lead time of ten seconds. A strap can be attached to the camera’s eyelets.
The power source of the 35mm camera are two CR2 batteries (eBay / Amazon*). One CR2025 battery is required for remote control of the wireless shutter release.
Films for the Lomo’Instant Square
What film format is the Lomo’Instant Square designed for? The camera is designed for the Instax Square format of Fujifilm, as already indicated in the name. This film format was introduced in 2017 and films are being produced for the new format.
The current color film for this format is Instax Square Film*, and the images are 8.6 by 7.2 cm. The captured image has a size of 6.2 by 6.2 cm and is surrounded by a white frame. This frame can be labeled, so it is suitable for events such as weddings or birthdays to leave small personal messages.
One pack of film contains ten pictures. The film must not come into contact with light, except of course when photographing. Therefore, do not open the camera until the film has been used up.
Accessories
With the Lomo’Instant Square Instant Mini Back you can also use the smaller Instax Mini films with the instant camera. So even black and white images are possible with the Lomo camera.
Other edition
The instant camera is sold in different editions. These differ in the design of the housing and sometimes in the scope of delivery.
