The Kodak Explorer is a view camera. It was manufactured by Kodak from 1989 to 1991. It was also sold under the name “Kodak Expedition“. A special feature of the camera is the housing. It is not a real underwater camera, but it should be able to withstand all weather conditions.

The 35mm camera comes with a fixed lens. The focal length is fixed and is 35 mm. The widest aperture is f/4.5. The lens is focused by autofocus.

The camera has a built-in light meter. The aperture and exposure time is set fully automatically by the 35 mm camera and cannot be fixed.

A flash light is built in for pictures in low light. If desired, the flash can be switched off completely with a switch on the front. Two AA batteries (eBay / Amazon*) are responsible for the power supply. Of course rechargeable batteries can also be used for the camera.

Films for the Kodak Explorer

The Kodak Explorer uses 35mm films. These are still easy to get today and are still being developed. Possible films for the Kodak Explorer are the Kodak Ultramax 400* for color images and the Ilford Delta 400* for black and white images. The camera determines the sensitivity by means of the so-called DX code on the cartridge. This code is present on both of the films mentioned.

The color film is a color negative film and is developed in the C-41 process. This development process is offered by most laboratories. The big drugstore chains in Germany offer the development of color films. The black and white film has to be put into a developer for this type of film. This process is also offered by most professional photo labs.

The Kodak Explorer exposes an area of 24 mm x 36 mm. This means that at least 36 photos fit onto a 36 frame 35mm film. The film is transported automatically.
