The Konica Z-up 140 Super is a compact camera for 35mm film, manufactured in the 1990s. It is characterized by its zoom lens and automatic functions, making it a user-friendly camera for everyday use.
Lens
The lens of the Konica Z-up 140 Super is a zoom lens with a focal length of 38 mm to 140 mm and a variable aperture of f/3.5 to f/10.2. It consists of 9 groups of 10 elements and features a lens hood.
The camera uses an active autofocus system with an infrared sensor and offers focus lock by half-pressing the shutter button. The effective focusing range is between 0.8 m (with 140 mm telephoto) and 0.8 m (less than 140 mm). A viewfinder with parallax correction markings for close-up shots is provided. There is no filter thread because the lens is not interchangeable.
Exposure Settings
The Konica Z-up 140 Super features automatic exposure (AE). It uses a CdS element for exposure metering.
The camera offers various exposure modes that can be set using a mode switch: Night Portrait, Flash On (fill-in flash), Pre-flash (to reduce red-eye), Auto, Flash Off, and Long Throw. Shutter speeds are electronically controlled and range from 3.2 to 1/280 second. A +1.5 exposure compensation mode is available.
The film speed is automatically set via DX coding from ISO 25 to ISO 3200; without DX coding, ISO 25 is used as the default. Automatic exposure is active in focus lock mode.
Flash System
The Konica Z-up 140 Super has a built-in flash that pops up automatically. The flash automatically activates when lighting conditions require it. The flash output is automatically adjusted according to the film speed, the distance to the subject, and the focal length. A pre-flash mode is available to reduce red-eye.
The flash range is 0.8 to 7 meters at ISO 100 and a 38 mm focal length, and 0.8 to 2.5 meters at a 140 mm focal length. The flash recharge time is approximately 7 seconds.
Additional Features
The camera features an electronic self-timer with a 10-second delay. A red LED flashes for the first 7 seconds, then remains lit for 3 seconds before the shutter button is released. The self-timer can be canceled.
There is a tripod socket for blur-free shots. A separate remote shutter release is available as an option. One variant of the model has a date imprint function.
Dimensions and Weight
The Konica Z-up 140 Super measures 119.5 x 68 x 55 mm. It weighs 290 grams without batteries. The body is made of plastic.
Film Recommendations & Batteries
The Konica Z-up 140 Super supports 35mm film with DX coding from ISO 25 to ISO 3200. For general photography, films with ISO 100 or ISO 200 are suitable. For photography in low light conditions or with flash, films with ISO 400 or higher are recommended. The Kodak Gold 200* is a good choice.
A film transport with automatic film loading, automatic film advance to the first frame, automatic film advance, and automatic rewind is available.
The camera uses a CR123A battery (eBay / Amazon*). These batteries are still very easy to obtain these days. When using 24-exposure film, one set of batteries can shoot approximately 10 rolls of film with a flash, which is equivalent to half the number of shots.
