The Konica EU-mini was a compact 35mm camera known for its ease of use and light weight. It was aimed at casual photographers looking for an uncomplicated camera for snapshots.

The camera was produced by Konica in China. Functionally identical models were also offered under the names Konica U-mini (USA), Konica K88 (China), and Konica K-mini. Additionally, an Auto-Date variant of the EU-mini was offered. With this model, the recording date could be exposed onto the images.

Furthermore, Konica offered companies the option to order custom variants. For example, there was a limited edition in the colors of the football club FC Bayern.

Later, the Konica EU-mini II followed. This model added a red-eye reduction mode when using the built-in flash.

The scope of delivery included a hand strap, a suitable battery, and a roll of Konica film.

Lens

The Konica EU-mini is equipped with a fixed Konica 28mm f/6.7 lens. This lens consists of three groups and three elements.

Since it is a fixed-focus lens, there is no need for manual focusing. The camera is set for a fixed shooting distance of approximately 0.9 meters to infinity.

Exposure Settings

The Konica EU-mini offers automatic exposure settings in three stages. As no manual settings are possible, the camera takes control of the exposure. The camera does not have a conventional exposure meter but uses an automatic system to control the exposure.

Flash System

The camera features a built-in electronic flash that activates automatically when needed, especially in low light. The flash range is between 0.9 and 2.3 meters at ISO 100/200 and between 0.9 and 4.6 meters at ISO 400. The flash charging time is approximately 5 seconds. The camera offers no external flash connections or manual flash modes.

Battery

The Konica EU-mini requires a suitable battery. You need to choose a CR123A battery (eBay / Amazon*). This battery type is still very easy to find today.

One battery charge is sufficient for about 20 rolls of 24 exposures each.

Dimensions and Weight

The Konica EU-mini is extremely compact and light, making it an ideal companion for on-the-go. Its dimensions are 110 x 61 x 32.5 mm. The weight without battery is only 135 grams.

Film Recommendations

The Konica EU-mini is designed for 35mm films (eBay / Amazon*). Although Konica no longer offers this film type, other manufacturers produce for this format.

The Konica EU-mini is equipped with a DX sensor that automatically adjusts film sensitivity to ISO 100, 200, or 400. For optimal results, it is recommended to use films within this range.

For outdoor shots in bright daylight, films with ISO 100 are well-suited, while for indoor shots or poorer lighting conditions, films with ISO 400 are better. The number of exposures per film roll depends on the film size used (typically 24 or 36 exposures).

The Konica EU-mini has a built-in film motor. After each shot, the film is advanced. The motor advances one frame per second. The camera automatically rewinds the film after the last frame has been exposed.

Quick User Guide

  1. Loading the Battery: Open the battery compartment and insert a 3V lithium battery type CR123A or DL123A.
