The Kodak Automatic 35 is a viewfinder camera with automatic exposure adjustment. It was manufactured by Eastman Kodak in the USA from 1959 to 1964. The model is part of the photo pioneer's Automatic/Motormatic series. The models are quite similar, differing mainly in their compatibility for external flashes. The Motormatic models come with a spring-loaded film transport, the Automatic models require manual film transport.

The bakelite camera comes with a fixed focal length lens. The name of the lens manufacturer is "Kodak Ektanar 44mm f/2.8". The focal length is 44mm and the maximum aperture is f/2.8. Focusing has to be done manually. The closest focusing distance for this lens is 76 cm.

Photography is made easier by the built-in light meter. It can be used with films from ISO 10 to ISO 160. The correct exposure is set automatically by the camera. The shutter speed and aperture can also be selected manually by the photographer.

Batteries are not required for photography. The selenium light meter works without electricity and the rest of the camera is mechanical. However, it is possible that over the years the light meter will lose accuracy or stop working altogether.

The Kodak camera comes with a Kodak Synchro 80 shutter. This has two possible shutter speeds, 1/40 second and 1/80 second. For daylight photography, Kodak recommends 1/80 second.

A tripod thread is provided with the 35mm camera. A flash with Kodalite connector can be used with the camera. Electronic flashes can be used with both shutter speeds. Flash bulbs of type No. 25, No. 5, AG-1, M5 and M25 may only be used at 1/40 second.

Films for Kodak Automatic 35

You can't use the camera without photo film The Kodak Automatic 35 needs 35mm film. This kind of film is still in production and can be processed by most photo labs without any problems. A great choice of film is Kodak Portra 160* for color images and Kodak T-Max 100* for B/W images. The Kodak Automatic 35 exposes an area of 24 mm x 36 mm.

The color film is processed in the C-41 process. This development process is offered by most laboratories. The black and white film must be processed in a "real" black and white developer. This type of development is offered by most professional photo labs. Developing at home is easier for this type of film than for color film and is usually cheaper in the long run.
