The Braun Candy model is a 35mm camera for quick snapshots. It was sold under the brand name of the camera manufacturer Braun from Nuremberg. This model was probably manufactured in Asia by the Haking company.
Various simple 35 mm cameras were sold under the Braun Candy series. The cameras are usually made very cheaply and come with a housing made of plastic.
This article refers to the Braun Candy with “Candy” printed on the top of the body and next to the lens. There is at least one similar model with the same model designation, but the option to set the film sensitivity is missing here.
A very similar model from Haking is the Haking CF 35. However, the front of this model looks slightly different. For example, the slide for the film sensitivity is positioned slightly differently.
Further information about the Haking models is available via the link provided.
Information about the camera
The model has a fixed 33mm lens that is not interchangeable. There is no focus setting. A sliding cover protects the lens.
This camera lacks an integrated exposure metering system. However, there is a slider on the front to select film speeds, including ISO 100/200, 400 and 1000. The aperture varies depending on the ISO setting, but the shutter speed always remains around 1/125 second.
An internal flash ensures clear photos in low light conditions and can be switched on via a slide switch underneath.
The camera is operated with two AAA batteries (eBay / Amazon*), which are mainly used for the flash. Without the use of the flash, they are not absolutely necessary.
It has neither a tripod thread nor features such as a self-timer or a connection for a cable release. There is a wrist strap for that. The camera was sold with a matching case.
Film suggestions for the Braun Candy
The Braun Candy uses 35mm film, which is still in demand and can be processed in many photo labs. The Kodak Ultramax 400* is ideal for color images, while the Ilford Delta 400* is recommended for monochrome images. Other suppliers of 35mm film are Foma, Lomography, Adox and Rollei.
Color film is processed using the C-41 process used by most service providers. Black and white films can be developed in professional laboratories or at home with the right equipment. Instructions for this are available online.
A normal film offers space for approx. 36 exposures. Manually advancing and rewinding the film is done with a knob and crank on the camera body.
